BYC Café

I was fortunate to grow up on that farm we had it was my job care for chickens
there where 4 cockerel for close to 65 birds all the time someone who acted "snotty" was taken to another coop I had and still use a walking stick being just 3 ft I was taught how to handle them as in Jo this is how we do it now you do the rest I think I have an advantage

Tribe 1 minus Mel and Ruffles making their way to their coop. This lot go to roost sometimes an hour before the bantams. That's Fat Birds influence mainly. She likes to make sure her and the tribe get close to the coop while the light is still good.

Punch and Mag. Yup, they're very bored and have taken to bossing each other about since their three hens are broody and sittingView attachment 1899314
Gedit, Notch, Donk (black and white and I'm a bit worried about her because she isn't eating enough) and Myth.View attachment 1899315
Ruffles and chick which I'm pretty sure is female. Good news for both Tackle and Treacle. Tackle will no longer be the most junior and Treacle will have a pullet to impress.View attachment 1899316Knock and her two chicks. I've got a bit of a problem here. The hatched staggered and there is a 36 hourish gap between chicks. The smallest needs to be either quicker than the larger or stick close to mum in order to be first to what mum finds. Knock (Mum) isn't terrible keen on me providing food. She'll let the chicks have a few mouthfuls then lead them away and start digging. This isn't uncommon with the mums here. It can make getting medicated feed down the chicks a bit of a mission. I've taken to putting a small bowl of food in the coop and shutting the others in while they eat. Knock you can tell is hungry and eats as much as a broody hen does when she gets off the nest. The chicks seem fine but still very wary of me. Mum doesn't help given every time I put my hand down she pecks it. Bear in mind this is knock who stands on my lap, or gets on the keyboard as I sit in front of the computer.
I have no idea what sex the chicks are.

I've found Barb's chicks to be rather feral. I've not decided if we're going to eat the 2 boys or give them away. The pullet I've named Una.
Barb will allow them to eat what I drop food for them and she allows me to touch them on the roost but they squawk up a storm and peck at my hand. It makes the thought of eating the males much easier.
