Interesting article about preserving a rare breed; its funny because one I was looking for is the Icelandic chicken. I gave up on that after a few years cause I can’t find a source for quality birds; I’ve seen a few advertised occasionally, but they were clearly not, and the owners said that’s cause “there isn’t a definite type” for icelandics....but that’s the very definition of a breed!
I’ve seen that quite often in other threads with other breeds, so I know I’m not alone in my quest for MY PERFECT CHICKEN

What really got to me was when they auctioned off the kitchen table and all the memories of laughter around that table flashed through my mind. :(

I can only imagine!! Things that trigger memories.....!
Recently, my son sold a house that we bought in 1974 when my husband got out of the Navy. We lived in it 14 years and our boys were born there....then my inlaws lived in it for several years then my son got married and lived in it and his four kids were born there. I went over by myself after the house was empty...I could hear the voices of the kids in my mind....and I so desperately wanted some piece of it to keep....I house number, a doorknob...something. Of course, the house was sold already and I didn't think it right to take anything....so I didn't....I just stood in that setting and soaked it up. I drove away thinking what a blessing it had been to us .......what great times and great memories we had had there....over 45 years. I still hear the peculiar click of the laundry chute door and the sound of the kitchen door closing..... I cannot believe all those years have gone by!!

I agree that chickens should be able to free range. I do so, but I have two dogs roaming around keeping predators at bay. Sometimes we win and sometimes we lose. However, someone being completely incompetent in their chicken keeping, completely replacing flocks year after year because they're "free ranging" isn't good animal husbandry, in my opinion. When you take on animals you have a duty to offer some sort of measurable protection for them.
I'm not discussing this topic any further

That's one of the reasons I keep the rugs that were in the family house when I was a child.
One of my relatives acquired these rugs and were going to burn them because they were dirty.
It took me a while to clean them but I look at them from time to time and think of all the people who walked across them.
Unfortunately having the chickens in the house means they don't spend much time on the floor any more. Oh well, I suppose it's a small sacrifice.:)
