BYC Café

War Eagle was just complaining - he never complains. It was time for fresh water so I went out to check on things. There was a cicada in his food bowl. Apparently he doesn't know they are good to eat. Maggie Mae has become the great cicada stalker/hunter/eater.
Our two cats eat spiders they find around the house

I saw this beautiful gal walking along my poultry netting fence line towards the ditch this morning.

Horrifically, I found her dead in the fence when I got home. 😢 She must have turned towards it after I left for work. I feel so guilty that I didn't think to move her. I've moved plenty of snappers. In fact, there was a much smaller one in the pen with her neck stretched out staring at the body. I got her out, across the road and yard nearly to the creek she was aiming for before she jumped off the fork I was carrying her with.

Good grief Tonya do you see allot of them around
Every year. It's breeding season and they like to lay their eggs in nests they dig in our yard. We are surrounded by ponds and the moat along the north side of our property. I saw a painted turtle laying eggs right next to the dragon along the walkway before I moved him to paint him.

Did she bury them ....or....?
What did you do with them, if anything?
They dig a hole with their back legs, lay their eggs then bury them. When the mud dries, it's nearly impossible to find the nest. I have yet to find a nest that is hatching. I think they must hatch at night. I marked the nest with a stick. The painted turtle eggs hatch in 67 to 75 days.

Have you ever seen a disturbed area that indicates the eggs hatched?
Would be interesting to place a cage around the nest.

No. I always miss it. I tried putting a bucket over a nest site once but never saw anything. Maybe I'll try with the one I know the location of. It would be due to hatch between Aug 13 to 21.
