I have been breeding and raising my own chickens (various breeds and mixes) for 20+ years now, and never had my pullets at POL ransacking the nest boxes for weeks without actually starting to lay.
The weather has been crazy this year and I believe it to be the reason.

I love it when the rip up the next box!

Working inside where the heat is on?

In the office they wear sweaters. The office is the same temperature as it is in the summer. It is 73F in my office.

Sometimes they will turn on portable electric hearts and be all bundled up too.

They think I am weird wearing shorts in the winter here. I do wear a raincoat on rainy days and I have a zip up hoody for going outside on other days.

I suppose I am odd for a native Californian

Yes, it really is strange, but I still have some eggs left from the adult hens, so no case of looming hunger crisis for us, although my egg supply is dwindling rapidly with all the apple pies etc. .

Good afternoon all. Beautiful day here and we’re getting in the 40s lately. A warm coffee in hand is a nice way to start the morning

I am still getting 9 or 10 a day but set myself up right. These are just starting and with light in there will lay through the winter.
Come spring I will get close the 18 a day

Why never heard of that

Old homesteaders used that method to preserve eggs without refrigeration.
1 oz. pickling or hydrated lime to 1 quart water.
Put clean unwashed eggs into the water so they are covered. Cover container loosely to prevent significant evaporation loss.
I have 2 full 5-gallon buckets in the basement.

It is 46F here this morning and I am at work in shorts and a polo shirt. It is funny to see the parkas out here already!

Anything below 50°F was parka season when I wa growing up in So. Cal.

Hmm, the image of a raincoat over, and hiding, shorts conjures up something bad!

Seems very odd that we are in the 40's in the morning and so are you way down south in Alabama!
