BYC Café

Good morning Cafe! Thanks for the coffee DL!

It was a busy weekend full of necropsies at the local agricultural college under the watchful eye of our wildlife pathologist (who unfortunately lives in the next province - hence the reason for this training to make life easier for her when people know how to document and collect samples properly). Some of the photos below are a bit gory, so they're hidden by a spoiler for those who would like to look at them.

The weather is cold with a light cloud cover here. We got a dusting of new snow overnight!

Is that a baby dolphin that was taken out of the seal's stomach or do I have that all wrong?

No, sorry - context! That's a midterm common dolphin fetus (we moved it over to the table with the seal to get better photos). The mother was in good condition, with possible haemorrhaging around her lower jaw which is usually indicative of trauma, but we have to wait for the histo samples to be run on a microscopic level before we can get confirmation of that.

That makes more sense. Poor dolphins. :(
