BYC Café

...with a note on the nose hair freezing 2° as I locked up the coop.
Mine start to freeze around 10 above. I noticed this in high school.

One day at the bus stop, I took a big sniff, my nose hairs froze. I exhaled, did it again, and said to the little girl standing there, "It's about 10 degrees out. I can smell it."

I sat a couple of seats behind her on the bus. At the next stop, her friend got on and sat next to her. She pointed to me and said, in a suitably awestruck voice, "She can smell how cold it is."

Special talents, indeed.

Good morning Cafe. Coffee is ready.

It is -7 here. Colby is suffering. When I was cleaning the coop yesterday afternoon I noticed blood on his chest. The front of his wattles have frost bitten again. He brushes them on the PVC feed trough edges and this has broken the tissue. He'll be worse this morning. I did succumb and got a pack of radiant heaters and put them up a few days ago. They really don't put out much in the way of heat but I placed him in front of one last night. I think he turned around and jumped down to move as I was leaving. He'll live but his beautiful wattles will be permanently damaged. I don't know how his comb is surviving this.

-3 here now. My chickens have never felt temps this cold, poor ladies. We'll see how they are in an hour or so.
Brrrr. We bottomed out at 0°F about an hour ago. I think everyone survived including Calypso who is still molting.
We are forecast to see double digits today. Even 10°F is way colder than I normally get here and yet I am giddy with excitement about the ‘warm’ day ahead!
More typical temperatures with lows in the mid 20s coming next week along with more snow.

I can't remember what kind of waterer you have, and not sure if they can get at any snow, but wattle dippage is the likely reason.

~-3 here, my supplemental light just went out. I noticed it was dimmer yesterday, thought it was just the cold, but probably need a new bulb.
