Now that the snow's melted, I carried some chicken litter up to the compost yesterday--only to find a deer leg by the compost!!! Snapped off clean above the knee. I was pretty shocked, and thought maybe the deer had tried to leap the fence to get into the garden. Then I went into the garden to take up the frost cover to see what had made it through the winter, and at the end of the garden there was ANOTHER deer leg. I felt sick over it. I imagine what happened was that a mountain lion got it when the snow was deep. We did not find the rest of the carcass. I'm still in shock. It's nature doing what it does, I understand, but I admire the deer grazing everywhere--preferably not coming through my windshield--and I did see lion tracks in the snow.
