Has anyone successfully grown sage?

I've killed it twice so far. Once in the garden then on my second try in a pot. Hope this is third time lucky but not sure what I'm doing wrong.

I've grown it, and it usually lasts about 3 years in my zone 4 garden before it gets so ugly I need to rip it out and start over again. I find it super easy to grow. Plant it, and forget it. Needs quite a bit of room, at least 1 - 2 s.f. I'm thinking you might be taking too much care of it. It likes lean, and kind of dry. Easy to start from seed.

Hmm. I've never even go it big enough to use.
Maybe it's the kind of dry I'm doing wrong. The first one did get watered by the automatic sprinklers. I thought the one in the pot looked like it was dying and watered more to save.
I'll find a spot in the garden doesn't get the watering system for this one then.
