Hi! New to BYC and semi new to gardening. Starting truly gardening almost 3 years ago when we bought our house. My mom was my gardener. She helped me prep the bed and pick plants that were easy to maintain and would work in our soil.

This year the internet convinced me to start vegetable seed indoors (good blogs and pictures make everything look fabulous to try, right?) so I convince my husband to buy a metal rack, some shop lights and more seeds that we could possibly need or eat. It's been 3 weeks and I have baby cherry tomatoes, watermelon, squash, jalapeno, and pumpkins growing.

I have already learned a lot. Like don't get discouraged when you think all your seeds have rotted. I thought all my watermelon seeds were worthless so bought a new pack and tried again, putting the original pots off to the side to clean out later. Well, that first batch of watermelon started growing after my second set was germinating.

Also, don't start all the seeds at the same time. I now have 2 dozen or more baby cherry tomatoes and not sure where I will put them all. I still need to build my raised beds!
Oooh, post pictures of your setup! Luckily you're warm enough to be able to move them out soon, I still have to wait at least a month and I'm already out of space... I have no idea what I'm going to do when I need to switch to larger pots...

Thanks for the welcome. I guess there is a learning curve despite all the wealth of internet knowledge. " I'll just start all the seeds since I will probably only get one plant out of it..."

Yep.

I have yet to start my cucumber, green pepper, lettuce, hot pepper mix, and countless other stuff I probably shouldn't have bought seeds for but went gung-ho!

BUY ALL THE SEEDS! RULE THE WORLD!...wait a minute.. where am I going to put them all?

Also, if anyone has tips on how to separate my pumpkin plants now that they are about 4 inches tall without damaging the root, I would love to hear it. Those things took off like weeds!

Once I learn how to add pictures (and find an sd card for my camera) I can add some photos.

Just separate them carefully... It's all you can do, lots of water after to help with Any root damage... Try to avoid needing to separate cucumbers.... They really don't like it...
The best gardening lessons come from our mistakes... I've made tons!
Welcome to seed addiction! Now to get you seed saving and plant breeding

Thanks! The internet scared me into thinking if I damaged the root they would explode! I just didn't predict how many would take off. Nearly every pumpkin seed I planted came out. I wasn't expecting much from a 50 cent pack of seeds.

Please don't encourage me to have another addiction.

I pick up hobbies like some people pick up colds. I don't think my budget can handle another addiction. I've been dreaming of power tools and chicken coops for the last few nights. My new best friend is my pocket hole jig...
