I have native black walnut , heartnut , bountiful butternut , Dunstan chestnut and Chinese chest nut . I have tried pecan but no survivors yet .

You can try a system of mulching with hot horse manure in the fall. Lay thick layer of leaves all around the pecan saplings. Pile up the fresh horse manure in a ring around it leaving a gap of about 8 inches from the base of the pecan. The hot manure can't touch the pecan or it can burn it up. Pile it at least a foot deep and then spread more leaves or straw over that. About every two weeks add some more manure and straw/leaves to keep the heat up as you go deeper into winter. I would also tent it in plastic to keep the ends of the twigs from frostbiting. That will capture some of the heat coming off of the manure and keep it warmer all over not just at the roots. Saw a man in Virginia manage to get his peach tree to produce using this system. For everyone else who didn't, they could get the tree to grow but it wouldn't bloom and set peaches.
