BYC members in Massachusetts?

Just a reminder.

'Well behaved dogs" seldom are around chickens. I had 2 great danes, Very well behaved dogs, but dogs are dogs and sometimes you just don't know. They were ok with the Larger Chickens, even the Silkies but ATE the chicks that got loose from their special pen (found a small hole). And that was after having chickens for a year so they were not something new.

Make provisions for the chickens to be safe.
I don't know anyone but maybe google for breeders. When I get a real farm and into the full time chicken-ing thing I will be buying from a local breeder.

You could look on Craigs LIst for people that are looking to home laying pullets or even older chickens. Their asking prices are stupid on some but I bet you could barter a little.

Welcome !

Anyone between Cape Cod and Plymouth looking to rehome any young hen that lays any color other than a light brown egg? We are looking to have a more colorful basket. Both our EE got eaten :-( I can't find anyone local that has anything other than chicks.

South Shore, MA, between Boston n Cape Cod...small flock of mixed chickens; Barred Rock Red Sex link, RI Red + Ameracaunas. Mixed ducks too; Pekins n Golden 300 Hybrids. Anyone nearby?

Hello! I live in Berkshire County in Western Mass & new to chickens and BYC! My chicks are about two weeks old & I'm thinking about letting them play outside soon (weather is around 80ºF).... Are there predators I should be aware of??

Lots ! I think 2 weeks is a little early but others will have to chime in there on that one.

For outside, I would make sure to sit with them in a penned in small area.
My 4 month old Pullets go out in my front yard but I sit With them and usually read, watch the sky for Hawks and enjoy the fresh air.
I only started doing it when they would Semi-follow me when I called them. That way if I HAD to get them in to their run I could.

Birds of prey are the most common daytime predators. They will kill large adults let alone tiny chicks. I've also lost birds to dogs, foxes and coyotes during the day. Even had a raccoon attack late day once.

Do you have an enclosed covered pen to put them in?
