I think (and I could be wrong),it will alert you or send an email the first time a thread you are watching has a new post. Then it waits til you visit it. I am not sure since it seems I have been on here non stop for a week. :)

If you are not sure you are subscribed to a thread, look at the top right and you will see either Watch this Thread if you are not subscribed and Unwatch if you are.
That's how it seems to work for me too.

I neglected to say how well the editing on a two year old thread went today. I was able to put a link for a safer way to set up Mama Heating Pad, giving immediate access to the exact page in my thread with the photos and the instructions. Lots of people already on the thread and I had even talked about closing the original thread and starting it all over, but so many valuable innovations (like the one I linked to) and fresh ideas contributed by amazing members of the Broody Brigade would have been lost. Writing a new article with a link in my signature was another suggestion, but frankly it's been my experience that after a quick flurry of activity, articles tend to get lost, even with a link in the author's signature.

If I had any issue, it came up right after I'd posted it and one of the Brigade members tested it. The link worked fine, but didn't go the page I've been referring to for over a year. Instead it went to a totally different page, still in my thread. The only thing I can think of is maybe on the new platform, the format of each page changed slightly, just enough to nudge page numbers. And since there is no "search this thread" feature, at least I didn't find it, I had to hunt and peck to find what I wanted then re-edit with the correct link.

In the overall scheme of things, that's probably no big deal. @aart reminded me that the post number didn't change, but I don't have all of 900+ post numbers memorized and wasn't smart enough to have made note of it previously for that very important post. The first link did, of course, have the post number on but I couldn't do a thread search to find it.

So thank you all so much for this unique (and from what I understand temporary) opportunity to solve something that has been troubling many of us over on that very active thread. You all ROCK!
