Turns out that one of those fuzzy butts I saw in the huddled mass was a BCM that came out to play. So the count at this point is 9 Bearded Silkies fromRiverside Silkies in N.Y., 1 BCM, 3 Delawares & 2 tiny tiny A & M Texas Quail. I am so satisfied with this shiped egg hatch for a change. I didn't mess with the humidity this time at all they stayed at 50% humidity straight through lockdown & everything. Maybe I will run it like that for awhile & see what other results I get.
I set the new Suro yesterday too. I bought it for $75 from a breeder that used it once & didn't like it. It is digital & has the humidity module & everything. I feel like it's Christmas or my birthday or something..................LOL. Cheryl has one just like it & loves it. Maybe I will leave the humidity at 50% on it too. It sure makes things alot easier.
Well we are off to Santa Cruz for the day & night. Aaron, my grown son, is the chicken watcher while I am gone........LOL He will pick up the chicks I have coming in the morning at the P.O. Was that poor timing or what??? I had no choice.

How funny! We live in Antioch but my DH works for UC Santa Cruz and is only home on weekends. My BF lives in Placerville. We are going up there today to celebrate her birthday and then spending the next night in the gold country to celebrate our 32nd anniversary! My DH is heading home from Santa Cruz today so you all will probably be passing him as you head down there!

I loved going but 1 day is good for me. I am a home body at heart with all that goes on around here. Enjoy your Placerville trip.
I was anxious about leaving all the chicks & incubating eggs & had an order coming in of live chicks while I was gone (shipping date NOT my choice). The live order arrived with only 2 chicks dead this time. Last time they were almost all dead. What a hassle that was. I chick has a bad leg & I vet taped it but don't know yet if it will work or not.
Does anyone know what causes that? I have had it on shipped eggs alot. Not usually on my own eggs though. I did have one Delaware egg of mine that hatched out a chick with one leg it couldn't keep down, but instead kept it drawn up to it's body all the time & hopped around on the other leg. That was out of over 100 chicks though.
On a recent Silkie hatch 3 of the nine that hatched (a fantastic hatch for eggs all the way from N.Y.) have splayed legs. I taped them & will wait & see if that fixes them.
Welcome newcomer Ronotti (sorry that's the Bay Area thread).................I am sure you will enjoy this group. I am oh so glad I don't have to worry about not being able to have roosters. I have waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too many roosters though that are growing out to go to the soup pot......LOL
More babies out this morning. I have at least 5 Buff Silkies from Sundowners, a Delaware or 2, a Wheaten Maran, a Black Australorp or 2 & a BCM or 2. I can't tell with the blacks who's who until I take them out. It is fun watching them hatching in the incubator. I leave them all for at least a day to make sure they are through hatching & them take them out & identify them. I will take them out later today. If they are black & have shiny clean black legs with pink toes they are Black Australorps. If they have fuzzy shanks & are black they are BCM. If they are yellow with bright orange clean legs they are Delawares. If they are yellow with fuzzy shanks they are Wheaten Marans. The Silkies are pretty distinctive with their vaulted skulls & fuzzy feet & 5 toes & black skin.....LOL. It's light outside now so I can go check the Silky pen to see if the broody silkies hatched out the other 2 Buff Silkie eggs I fostered to them.
hi i'm new to the boards and in sacramento. i have a beautiful 3 month old ameracuna/easter egger who has turned out to be a roo. 'mavis' needs a new home, does anyone out there need a rooster?? i'm scared as we're not allowed to have chickens and mavis just started to try to crow.
