Hey out there! I'm from Los Banos. I'm new to the boards but it sure is nice to talk to other people around here! I'm expecting new chicks probably tomorrow or Thursday at the latest. My flock right now is only about four months old so I'm new at this. Can't wait for eggs though. We've been trying to get out into the country for years but it just never seems to work out

so......I decided to make the most of where we are. I'm very thankful we have an older house so it has a large lot. I'll post some pics tomorrow if my chicks arrive

Welcome,
I'm in Turlock so you aren't too far from me & Bridget Little is in Newman. I too live in an"older" house but I do live in the country. If you stay around these forum boards I am sure you will have everything you want before you know it. Probably more than you ever dreamed of. Good Luck!!!!

I have what are supposed to be White Crested Black Polish . They were due tomorrow according to my records so I wasn't paying attention to the incubator & was messing with the new water system in the brooders a couple of feet away when I noticed 2 chicks had hatched. One is what I expected (neverhaving hatched WCBP before), but the other one is bigger & dark reddish brown with kind of a golden breast........???????? I don't have the slightest idea what this chick is....I wrote to the breeder & ask & she answered she didn't know. Her son must have mixed up the eggs...LOL....................I wrote back to see what other breeds she has to try to figure out what I have her......LOL

cool, a mystery chick!
McMurray online has a lot of chick pics to ID breeds.

It's not a keeper.......she wrote back saying it is probably a mix that runs free range with other breeds & I already think it's a cockerel. Just add that to the already count of 38+ extra cockerels I have growing out. I don't plan to process that many so a trip to the auction is in my plans for the near future....LOL

I got 3 little WCBP out plus that one wierdo chick & 1 more might be piping. I took them out of the incubator & stuck them in with the week + old silkies. Everybody seems fine with that. I needed to move other eggs down to the hatcher tray for the next 2 hatches.
We revamped the nipple waterers in the brooders & are giving them a try again. So far so good. The chicks are curious enough to figure out what to do & no messes so far. It seems that there is something new to work on daily.....LOL
MY new chicken sheds are overdue & I called & they said they will put a rush on them & try for the weekof the 8th. I sat down & drew everything out. Now I have to figure out how to house 19 breeds in 13 pens........LOL. I guess I am lucky to have so many growout pens because they will be in use until I make some hard decisions & cut back.........

I am so bummed............I went to the Farmer's market in town with my daughter & son & was gone a couple of hours & when we got home the first thing I always do it check the chicks in the brooder & all the White Crested Polish I hatched out yesterday & the day before were dead, 4 of them, a buff Wyandotte several days old & a blue Silkie & a black silkie about a week old. I have no idea what went wrong. They were just all scattered & dead. I have never had that happen before.
