Calif. N.Central Valley/Foothills

Hello.

Names Ron, live in Dos Palos. Just did the chicken thing for the wife, but actually having quite a bit of fun with it myself.
Here's our (hopefully) girls.

Well, I'm in Ripon! Thats just north of Salida, Modesto, Turlock... My three hens had to find another home due to doctors' suspicions they were causing mom's lung disease. Mom passed away a few weeks ago. So we got 6 new babies. They keep us busy and happy!
We are brooding them in the house, of course, so their happy sounds fill the place. I had to put a little pan of Diatomaceous Earth in their hutch to dust in, they were trying to dust without any dirt! We have lots of wild birds in the yard-- worried about them going outside in the chicken tractor and possibly picking up mites or something. Any thoughts?

I use DE also, but I don't think it's possible to keep the parasites totally off the birds. I think they are much better off outside eating the grass (and bugs) and the DE keeps the parasites from getting out of control. Most say you should treat for worms at least once a year as well.

Ron!

Welcome to this thread! I'm in the Delta area so not really part of the N. Central Valley/Foothills. My best friend lives on some acreage outside of Placerville and I'm trying to persuade her to get chickens. They are thinking about it! I wish that I had the land that they have. We love it up there and have been thinking about retiring in that area.

Hello! Ron put a link to this thread in the main N Cali thread. So I thought I'd pop by. :D I'm in Redding. We moved several years ago from Oroville. All my birdy booty is listed in my signature. :D I'm waiting to get my hands on some more BC Marans though. :D Then I'll feel complete...for now. ;)

Welcome Ron. We are living here in Sutter Creek, Ca. just north of Sac. near Placerville. Have 20 chicks. 2 ducks . Good luck on your new flock.

Gosh.................somehow I thought I had gotten unsubscibed to this thread because I hadn't been notified of anything going on here but I guess it's because nothing has been going on here.........LOL
I am going to Lodi today at 4 for a Delta Backyard Poultry Meetup Group meeting. We are doin s finger food potluck pic nic t the Lodi Wine Cellars patio & will have a chicken talk. I live in Turlock so I will leave around 3 I guess.
Last week end there was a Friends of Feathers chicken get together here at my house. Nothing official, just a fun get together. It was the first time I had tried anything like that but it went over so well I will do it again. I had alot of help putting it together. Another local chicken lover wants to have a chicken get together at her place in Delhi somewhere around Easter so if anyone is interested give me your name & I will get you on the list to be notified. We had a meet & greet round robin last weekend at my house so everyone there gets to know everyone eles, where they live, what they raise etc. We have a great raffle with donated chicken related items.....such fun...!!!!! It is a pot luck & we had waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay alot of food....LOL
One of the raffle prizes was the new forage greens trays I have been making. Cheryl had one at her get together as a raffle prize that George (PetRock's) husband had made. We all wanted to win it but I didn't so I came home & have been making my own since. My process has evolved since I made my first ones. I think I finally have it down to as cheap & fast as I can get it. The metal hardware was a big expense & I found away around it. My chickens love the greens so much I can't keep enough growing. I bought 20 trays so when I finish tham all maybe I can get a rotation going. If your chickens get to free range you don't need them but most of my chickens are in breeding pens without access to fresh green grass etc. Debi gave me the name of the company you get the forage mix seed from so I got 10lbs. Groworganics.com It must be very popular because they run out & I had to wait for my order to be filled.
I am off to staple the hardware cloth to my greens trays.
Anyone local enough that wants to do some let me know & we will set up a workshop day.
