The first year the BR layed through the winter, (young and dumb) was how I described it. I'm fine with the low production. Our growers market only has one more weekend and I would run out of room in the frig, (I have 2 and a reach in unit), really fast if they kept laying. We are quite a ways out of town so selling from the house would be an iffy proposition. I have customers that would buy them but then I would have to drive them into town. I usually reward the neighbors in the winter for putting up with the roosters during the spring and summer. Lucky they are mostly teachers and used to early mornings.
We have another vender at the market that ususally runs 700 chickens. Much more commercial than me. People know the difference so we each have our markets. If I'm remembering correctly his son does something similar down in Butte county. I still hated chickens then!
I also blow the eggs out and decorate them with glitter, bead them, decals, what ever I feel like at the time. Besides, bantam eggs are TOO CUTE TO CRACK!
