California - Northern

I'm feeding 47+ hens and getting 5 eggs on a good day. Come spring they will make up for the down time though.

Tomorrow is 2 weeks with two hours of light in the morning for 14 hens and I am now up to 5 eggs a day.

It they old that until spring I will be happy!

Thanks for the compliments. I can't wait to fill em up and have everyone comfortable and laying strong.

Yea im looking at a property just north of Yreka. Im excited to see the property and talk to the owners tomorrow. Ill take pictures.
I feel ya on the low egg production. I shook my head at all the empty bags of fees in the garage and then all the empty egg cartons in the kitchen :(

I just sold some excess duck eggs today. I have way more than I need. People weren't kidding when they said when your birds start laying - the eggs would roll in like crazy! We cannot eat them fast enough. haha I am making egg salad this weekend though. YUM!

I made scones today. Any baked good that is semi healthy- I am whipping them up lol. Since we don't buy snack foods- we rely on my moments of betty crocker to whip up stuff. Anyone every made bearnaise sauce? Or eaten it? Is it good?

The first year the BR layed through the winter, (young and dumb) was how I described it. I'm fine with the low production. Our growers market only has one more weekend and I would run out of room in the frig, (I have 2 and a reach in unit), really fast if they kept laying. We are quite a ways out of town so selling from the house would be an iffy proposition. I have customers that would buy them but then I would have to drive them into town. I usually reward the neighbors in the winter for putting up with the roosters during the spring and summer. Lucky they are mostly teachers and used to early mornings.

We have another vender at the market that ususally runs 700 chickens. Much more commercial than me. People know the difference so we each have our markets. If I'm remembering correctly his son does something similar down in Butte county. I still hated chickens then!

I also blow the eggs out and decorate them with glitter, bead them, decals, what ever I feel like at the time. Besides, bantam eggs are TOO CUTE TO CRACK!

Coops came today unexpectedly!!!

I called about a day to late to tell him to put both nest boxes on the sides and chicken doors So only one coop is not exactly how i need it.

Still some minor mods to do but l in all, Im very happy with this work.
I like those mike. Is that Trex on the bottom of sides of the coops? This looks like his 6x10. I like it with the door i the back.
How heavy are those? I was thinking of a larger one and 3 smaller ones. I like it with the sides wooded completely. He offers them on CL with only partially sided on the sides which i do not like so much. I may just make them myself it time will allow.

Nervous but I will be home much of the day. Working on a coop and cleaning the others. Plus my car window wont go up so I guess I need to attend that too.
oh and start to clean 800 feet of buried driveway.

I have not seen the hawk in a few weeks and he was usually heard in the am. Nothing today. I dont think he will want to mess with Huey anyways. I should of named him Arnold but maybe in a few weeks if we do get the place I will name the Langshan or the other Jersey Giant that I still plan on getting.

Woohoo Ron! I am so happy to hear the lights worked and only in 2 weeks!

Zooweemama: Good job on selling some Duck eggs! I saw some for sale on the Sac Craiglist for $9.00 per dozen! I had to turn on the lights. Store eggs are gross!

OR4hmom: Not turning on the lights makes sense too! Last year I turned on the lights on Nov1. This year I waited until closer to December and only for the layers. I almost did not turn them on but that one egg a day was not going to work for me. Also, my co worker almost cried when I told her I might not have eggs to sell her.

. Here in Woodland/Davis, I could sell every egg they lay and would not have enough.
