California - Northern

my flock was SO happy to have a day outside of their coop/run today, despite the light rain that kept falling intermittently -- and i took the opportunity to get some updated photos:

Love them Laura! Really pretty girls - somehow the lock on the pen last night didn't get latched and my girls are out playing in the rain now. Hope they don't look up too long and drown

Wow, those are great.  I'll be going to Christmas with my step-kids & grandkids..............could you send me your recipe?  And I've been assigned to bring a "side dish" to go with prime rib roast.  It's a 3 hour drive, anyone got any ideas?  Dang, appetizer, salad or dessert would have been so much easier.  Although I do plan to bring some devilled quail eggs too.

Deb

How about scalloped potatoes? That sounds yummy. Or, this recipe from the Food Network is so good: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ina-garten/spinach-gratin-recipe/index.html

Hi Liz!

I get my eggs from ebay or BYC members. I find someone on a breed thread that has nice chickens and then stalk send a pm asking if they sell hatching eggs. I usually pay them using Pay Pal. That is how I got the EO Basque and Heritage RIRs. I did order from Dick Hortsman, but he does not pack his eggs well for shipment. Gabbard seems bad too and they provide eggs for My Pet Chicken.

Bye the way, someone on the NYD Hatch-a long thread had the same problem with P Penne eggs. They came cracked and weeping with one stinky egg on delivery from the PO

. Are they poorly packing old eggs or are they ruining them with some type of sanitizer? Three day old shipped eggs should not be stinky.

Most of the serious breeders have closed up shop until January or so. Not only are hens not laying but the low light levels lowers the fertility of the Roos.

Agreed! I don't sell eggs during this period. I will set some eggs myself, or give them to friends. It's time for the birds to rest and in many of my breeds I have mixed everyone up. I'll set up my pens after culling for SOP sometime in January.

I missed this yesterday! The ear lobe and egg color does not work for all breeds. It really only works for our American breeds. CLs do not follow blue laying rules associated with the Araucana type breeds.

Yes, you will have Olive colored and probably speckled eggs. I can't wait to see what yours lay, since I have 7 of these guys in my Brooder...

Liz, wait until Cheryl sets up her pens and has Hatching eggs and get them from her or someone else on this thread. They have very healthy chickens, which results in beautiful healthy and great hatching chicks.

Thanks Ron!

I may have some eggs available for TEST hatches before that. The way it works for me and my friends, is they take the free eggs, hatch them and raise them to a certain age, then we agree what birds I need to get back for my breeding pens and the other ones remain with the hatcher...everyone wins!
