water in pans or small temporary waterers is the only thing i can think of, too.

Amelia update: still alive! still puffy and closed-eyes, but moving a wee bit more than she did yesterday, and when i put a small dish of yogurt in front of her she pecked at it happily. so that seems to be a good sign.

Cheryl, sorry frozen pipes are a pain. Maybe try letting a hose run at a steady trickle the night before. Moving water doesnt freeze as much as still water. We do that to help keep the main water lines from freezing. That will also help so that you will have a water source to give the birds temporary water in small tubs, bowls or buckets until the waterers thaw out.

Trisha

Thanks Trisha, actually I turned the hose on last week when I went there and discovered they were frozen. After a bit because the hose and pipes are on the same line, they did thaw out, unfortunately because it's not my property and I'm 30 minutes away I can't leave the water running :(

for Amelia. I know she means so much to you. Maybe she's just cold and maybe she hasn't been drinking enough because the water is so chilly???

Cooper, very pretty and cold looking pics! Is that fence on your property line?

Ron, what were you thinking of ordering from Black Diamond? I did not have the best results with her eggs. Have you ever considered ordering from Urch Turnland Poultry?

I just saw on another thread that Good Shepherd Ranch is now going to be selling chicks, poults and started birds. Nice!
Yes! I want to order form him. Jim on the Australorp says he ships well too.

He is supposed to have SG Dorkings this year too. Since the La Fleche are pretty much gone for this year from Sand Hill, I was going to get those and some Australorp eggs from him. I could throw a dozen SG Dorking eggs in too!

If I don't disconnect the hose from the faucet each night the hose will freeze the faucet. If I take the hose off, the faucet doesn't freeze for some reason. Then I drain the water out of the hose so I can use it in the morning. Even draining it I still get some ice chunks that block up the nozzle.

It was cold this morning in Woodland, but the water fountain just had chunks in it.

If the pipes do not bursts, then they should be fine and thaw in the Bay area by 10 or so.

My Mom has two light bulbs in her pump house ant that keeps it warm enough to keep her pipes from freezing at 4500 fee out of Redding and past Shingletown.

Maybe we aren't talking about the same breeder. Jeanne only has Dorkings, that I know of, not Australorps. I wouldn't order from her again. One egg hatched out of 2 dozen. Not the best type, poor fertility. JMO

I'll send you a PM also. :)
Chiqita, this made me laugh....I'm thinking to myself, "Of course the showgirl roosters are more rambunctious!  They can actually SEE while they're trying to mate!" :gig My little silkie rooster did the mating dance to a tree trunk the other day.

And, the part about the silkies not being the brightest is true too.  Although in their defense, they really do have trouble seeing past those big beards and crests.

Ha so true. I try not to go full beard on my SG for just that reason. I bet debs SG can't see either. I also think the Turkin personality makes them a bit fiesty. Plus if sparkles is the mother she is ultra mega fiesty. I think its the sparkles Iggy boys that can be mean. Folk wisdom says the temper men comes from the opposite sexed parent. I think silkies have been bread fr pets longer then any chicken and it shows too.
I hate hyperbole so much I could just explode into a zillion pieces!

No one in a million years would do that!

Hopefully I will get some answers today and finish off all the nyd hatch contests. Frustrating to not know what people want done but still have to do stuff. Especially when you were not expecting to do it!

Quote: I was looking at her Dorkings. Thanks for letting me know! It did sound dicey since she has to drive a long distance to ship them. Is that where Lucky came from?

Let me know if you want me to try hatching some SG Dorkings from Urch.

Quote: Yes Chiqita! I am sorry you have to finish all of the NYD stuff. Thank you for doing it and I hope the rest of the Hosts recover from all of the things going on with them currently. It might be a good idea to pray for them too.

I sent a PM to Jim a couple of days ago to let him know who I was, since the participant contest said he needed to find out who Ron was that won second place...Funny Stuff!
