Question for those of you who have a Genesis 1588 incubator. I have had my new one plugged in with water in trough 1 for over 5 hours. I have 2 separate thermometer/hygrometers to check the accuracy of the unit. Temperatures on the thermometers and the unit are all within 1 degree (99 to 100 degrees) so that is good. The humidity reading on the incubator is 46% but both hygrometers read 61%. I am currently calibrating both hygrometers with the salt water slushy in a bag method. Would you recommend that I go ahead and just run it with the factory settings? I do have the red vent plug removed. Is that right?

I never use the red plug (not even sure where they are any more). Adding the eggs will affect your humidity as well. I use a huge syringe barrel to add water, it seems to take about half of it in water added per day. Don't forget, humidity in a genesis is totally dependent on the humidity in your house, so your result will vary. Depending on where you live and what you use to heat your house, the amount of added water will be linked to those factors.

Finally got a good picture of my newly hatched chick's parents :) I went to my grandma's & tracked them down. Do you think the mama is a RIR like the Roo, Big Red? Dusty is their chick

I agree, roo looks like a HQ RIR and hen appears to be a Black Sex Link.

Anyone else seeing those, or do I have cookies on my computer refining which ads I see?

My ads are tied to what I've been reading. For months now my ads have been mostly home improvement stuff since I was doing the kitchen remodel.

snake my aquarium tubing through the hole to make adding water easier. Come on babies! Start to grow!!!

Debi, I use a big syringe barrel (no needle) from the feedstore to add water. Then I put a slurpee straw in the vent hole to direct the water to where I want it. The end of the straw is like a little funnel and the syringe tip fits perfectly.

Do ducks quack when they hatch? If so that is going be something to hear at 3 in the morning....

They peep, they sound just like chicks. Quaking doesn't come until much later. My ducklings that I hatched a month ago still only peep. Kind of a high pitched whistling peep.

Hard to beat the cuteness factor on a baby duck.

Our sweet baby died

She seemed like she was doing so much better, so we went to the feed store to get her a friend before they closed and when we came back she was on her back again, dead. And the two we picked up for her are both sick, too! One was trampled in the corner (think it's circling the drain, sadly) and the other seems like it might make it. I thought, hey, at least they wont trample her. Guess I should have just gotten lively ones. I'm sure if the one dies they'll give me a different one, though. It was my choice, and all the others looked healthy. The worst part is, I think I'll always wonder if maybe she got too hot and couldn't move. If we had stayed home she might have been okay.

I'd like to post a black and white picture I took of her before we buried her, but I don't want to bother anyone so you all let me know if that would be alright. It isn't graphic, of course. Just sad. She was so tiny, it looked like she was curled up back in the egg.

I'm so sorry, you wouldn't believe what the other chicks would have done to her at the feed store. You did a good thing.

The rooster mobile is loaded!
Tomorrow is Small Animal Field Day for 4-H. I've got 4 roos and 6 girls ready to go. Chicks will be loaded tomorrow morning. Should be quiet here tomorrow morning. I left 1 roo here, can't let DH get used to not having someone crowing. He wanted to know when I got the rooster in the cage out front today, it was a partridge rock hen crowing for the rest of her flock.
Woot! Good luck today!

Thanks, Deb! Around here, we hardly have to heat the house. I have the incubator in Spare Oom with the brooders. It is a constant 75 to 80 in there with the heat lamp going. I need to get a bigger syringe. I have a smaller one and it will take forever when I have to add water. Good idea about the slurpee straw! Monet may have to suffer through a slurpee in order for me to get the straw!

You are right, the ads you see are based on your previous search history, the ads take from the information in your browser which are stored in the "cookies". If you were to search "Sees Candy" you would see those ads pop up on this and other ad based websites. You can block this by telling the browser not to save cookies, or not to share. Most are set to the default to save and share.

Has anyone attempted to make a chicken pedigree? I know it would be hard....

I'm not getting any candy ads! I'm getting ads for cruise ships, hotels, universities and automatic chicken plucking machines!!

I think that the ads that pop up are from sites that you have been on or something like that! I know that if I go on Stromberg's or Overstock.com, etc. that those are the ads that pop up for me on BYC. I'm sure a computer person could explain it for us. I guess they are tracking our cookies??? Is that right???
ya, go to a candy website or write an email with candy in it, you'll get coupons immediately. Google is great with that stuff.
Sigh. One of petrocks chicks she got from me had cocci and passed this morning. She has them on sulfed but I'm depressed. I did not have on medicated starter, because I decided it is not so great for silkies who get poopy butt. ( everyone is fine here I I thought one of the silkies in another room might have had red poo but it was the towel they were on, had red in it)

I'm wondering if I should just give in and go back to medicated for all the chicks to help prevent it? It seemed like I still saw cocci every few batches of chicks anyway, its so prevalent around here. Is there anything else I should be doing as pre prevention ? I feel like since I do sell chicks I should go as far as I can. Do I need to change clothes when I go into the office maybe?

This was the first time I've used the brooders this year, so they got a bleach after they went into storage and when I pulled them out.
( I have been reading more this morning so i will add I do use reg warteres and towels for bedding, changed every day or 2 depending on density of chicks. I wash the towels, but dont bleach em.)

Try this:
Get a piece of turf for them as week old chicks. Leave them on not medicated feed. Watch the chicks and if they start showing symptoms(statue standing, fluffed up and walking slowly) treat with corid. Medicated feed is not high quality.

Also give them Big Ole Bird!

I have to treat sometimes. The Pene x Cl and Barnie hatch I have not had to treat. The hatch before that I had to treat. I have never lost a chick to coci. Even the slilkies I hatched. I did treat them with Corid just before they went to live with Amy Beth.

Debbie, sorry for your loss!
