Question for those of you who have a Genesis 1588 incubator. I have had my new one plugged in with water in trough 1 for over 5 hours. I have 2 separate thermometer/hygrometers to check the accuracy of the unit. Temperatures on the thermometers and the unit are all within 1 degree (99 to 100 degrees) so that is good. The humidity reading on the incubator is 46% but both hygrometers read 61%. I am currently calibrating both hygrometers with the salt water slushy in a bag method. Would you recommend that I go ahead and just run it with the factory settings? I do have the red vent plug removed. Is that right?
I am having the same readings you are, although I do not have the Hygrometer When I fill trough 1 it stays at about 46-47% humidity on the monitor on the Genesis. After about 2 days the humidity drops to........right now it is at 36%. The notes on the instructions said to keep the humidity between 45-55% and then 55-65% at lock down. Well, if I go by that note, then it is staying at about 47% based on only the Genesis reading, and after about 2 days needs more water to get back up to 47ish %. Since Ron and others have said humidity wasn't completely critical in the beginning I haven't been too worried about it. The temps I am about 1 degree off between the Genesis reading and the one I put in there. So I bumped mine up just a little because Quail eggs said they need to be at 100 degrees and using the factory setting of 100, the temp was reading about 99.5 which would have been perfect for chicken eggs, except at egg level it was about 1 degree less.....?

This has been driving me a little nuts for the last 5 days but I am trying not to worry about it too much. These aren't the chicken eggs I have coming on April 9th, so I am hoping to get this all worked out before then. If any hatch in a couple of weeks, I will consider myself lucky.

With my chicken eggs, I really hope to get it worked out a little more decisively about what the readings really are.

Woo hoo! Totally random post, but I happened to be shopping for Easter candy/chocolates for my kiddos and catching up with this thread at the same time. What happened to pop up on BYC but an ad for $4 off any $40 or more purchase at Sees, which is where we get the girls' candy every year. Yeah for good ads!

Anyone else seeing those, or do I have cookies on my computer refining which ads I see? :/

I have two versions of the Genesis.

There is no fast rule with using the tanks. You should get the correct humidity with the channels in the middle. Put food coloring in it so you can see the level. I would fill the one of the middle ones and see what you get. If it is too low then fill the second.

Get the humidity up to 35 to 40% and wait until the humidity drops to 25% before adding more water. I have to fill mine about every 3 days. Don't fret the humidity too much. It is the temps that will get you. I have mine in a walk in closet with a space heater in it to keep the temp stable at night. The room is up stairs so I also have to watch for warm afternoons.

Yes, get those eggs in there! you can fiddle with humidity as you go. The Genesis is easy to get dialed in. I just move 14 Duck eggs over to mine from the Brinsea and loaded the Brinsea up with Delaware and Dorking eggs. I managed to get close to 48 eggs into the Brinsea!
I have my 10 eggs from chiqita in the incubator! Whoo hoo!!! I went ahead and followed the directions exactly. I did put the red food coloring in the water to make it easier to see. That's a great suggestion, Ron! I am going to leave the red plug in for 10 days and then remove it and snake my aquarium tubing through the hole to make adding water easier. Come on babies! Start to grow!!!

We can stumble through together! I couldn't wait for my quail eggs to get here so I went ahead and put 10 chicken eggs in. I can hardly wait until I candle them at day 10!

Good job both of you!

Ali: The link in my signature has a chart for candling and air cell size during incubation. If the seem to be off, you can adjust the humidity. Yes, the temps sound good! Do keep them closer to 100 especially if the quail need it. The chicken eggs do well there too.

If the eggs have lighter shells, you can usually see some veining at 5 days...or you could wait until day 7. If adding water thought, sneak in a candle or two

Quote: That is very tempting but I may be getting a shipment of Blue Australorp eggs on Wed. The Ducks hatch next weekend so the incubators will be very full. I need the second Genesis for hatching. I have 48 in the Brinsea and 17 in a genesis. I suppose I could squeeze in a bit over a dozen in the bator....Very tempting....

Do ducks quack when they hatch? If so that is going be something to hear at 3 in the morning....

I need to look for that add! My kids always get see's.... One year I didn't buy them see's ....they noticed!
