I am getting some amazing eggs! The Marans OE is from Chiqita and the dark eggs are from my Partridge Pene:

Those are truly beautiful....I love how the dark ones look next to the Lovely green ones. I have been hatching a lot of chicks Lately... I'm excited to see what the next generation blur isbar X blue maran eggs look like....I'm sure they are going to be beautiful...

Question for those of you who have a Genesis 1588 incubator. I have had my new one plugged in with water in trough 1 for over 5 hours. I have 2 separate thermometer/hygrometers to check the accuracy of the unit. Temperatures on the thermometers and the unit are all within 1 degree (99 to 100 degrees) so that is good. The humidity reading on the incubator is 46% but both hygrometers read 61%. I am currently calibrating both hygrometers with the salt water slushy in a bag method. Would you recommend that I go ahead and just run it with the factory settings? I do have the red vent plug removed. Is that right?

Beautiful! I have some OE chicks from chiqita in my brooder! I hope that the girls lay beautiful eggs like yours! My 2 Marans OEs are second generation from Wynette and the one that lays olive eggs lays more of an khaki/army green egg. The other one has a straight comb and lays a Marans dk brown egg. Here is a pic of their eggs:

Thanks! This year after her first molt, it seems like most of her eggs are this color. Last year, every one she laid looked different! The dark egg is from my hen who had sour crop last week. She seems to be totally recovered but hasn't laid an egg yet. I am hoping for the best! I miss her dark eggs in my egg basket!

I run with the vent out all the time because there is only one. Other types have more vents. Some studies suggest keeping the vent plugged for some of the incubation time(first 18 days) helps strengthen the chicks. Then remove the plug at the end of incubation.

Temperature is fine. Humidity is high on all of the hygrometers. After calibration, try getting it to something lower--like 35 to 40%. I fill 1 or two of the tanks in the center.

Thanks, Ron. So you don't fill trough 1? Mine has trough 1 around the outside, trough 2 which is on the inside of the 1st one and is filled at day 18, and 2 squarish troughs in the middle that the directions don't say anything about. I'm going to make sure there is only water in trough 1 and no drops anywhere else. Then I think that I will just set the eggs and go for it!

There is no fast rule with using the tanks. You should get the correct humidity with the channels in the middle. Put food coloring in it so you can see the level. I would fill the one of the middle ones and see what you get. If it is too low then fill the second.

Get the humidity up to 35 to 40% and wait until the humidity drops to 25% before adding more water. I have to fill mine about every 3 days. Don't fret the humidity too much. It is the temps that will get you. I have mine in a walk in closet with a space heater in it to keep the temp stable at night. The room is up stairs so I also have to watch for warm afternoons.

Yes, get those eggs in there! you can fiddle with humidity as you go. The Genesis is easy to get dialed in. I just move 14 Duck eggs over to mine from the Brinsea and loaded the Brinsea up with Delaware and Dorking eggs. I managed to get close to 48 eggs into the Brinsea!

I almost forgot. At lockdown I fill every channel and sometimes have to add a glass storage container of water with a sponge in it to get and keep the humidity at about 70%. This last hatch was a hard one for humidity. We must be having a seasonal change here.

Finally got a good picture of my newly hatched chick's parents I went to my grandma's & tracked them down. Do you think the mama is a RIR like the Roo, Big Red? Dusty is their chick

The Roo looks like a Hatchery RIR and the hen looks like a Black Star Hybrid.
