California - Northern

Alright guys, the incubator is plugged in and I visited Just Struttin' Farm today and picked up two dozen of Deann's laying flock's fertile eggs (I just have to say, Deann is so lovely and so are all her birds... but her English Orpingtons!! I die.

They were bigger than my son! So beautiful. Thank you so much Deann! It was so nice of you to have us out.) and some 10 day old fertile store bought eggs just on the off chance one or two might hatch. Anyhow, I am doing a lot of reading and trying to go back over the thread and pick out things you all have already answered, but, inevitably, I'll probably be bothering you all with questions shortly. I promise to repay you with fluffy baby pictures in about 22 days (setting tomorrow.)
That is fantastic!

We will be here for you!

Ah! Already confused. What is the scoop on dry incubation? I filled trough one as the instructions recommended, thinking I would see how that did first, and the incubators hygrometer says 54% and the other we bought (http://incubatorwarehouse.com/incubator-remote-thermometer-hygrometer.html this one) says over 60%. And no, I didn't calibrate them

. But the eggs aren't in yet! So that's good.

Anyway, obviously the humidity is too high weather you're planning on dry incubation or not. I wasn't, but it seems like a lot of people recommend it. What do you all think? And should I take the water out of the trough completely? Just remove some? I took the red vent out, thinking that might help, but I really have no idea.

Happy Anniversary!
x2. Did I miss a picture of that brand spankin' new cabinet bator?
Well hatching officially stresses me out. LOL I had the therm up to 100 yesterday and suddenly is dropped to 97. I kept fiddling with the thermostat to get the temp up. Struggled. Hours of adjusting and waiting later I realized one of my young daughters was messing with the cords and it had gotten moved and the sensor was laying at the bottom, trapped by the turner. Despite the 24 hour no touch rule I had to remove the lid and rescue the cord. The turner couldn't even turn properly. I adjusted the position and TAPED it into place this time. But as I waited for the true temps to be measures it was in excess of 103. I almost died. I am hoping I didn't kill the eggs in the process. From about 6pm on I was able to finally keep it at 101 during the day, it dipped to 100.something at night and then back up to 101.something during the day. Steady. So THAT part has me happy. I am just really hoping I didn't damage them yesterday. :(

The duck eggs go in tomorrow. So worse case *wipes tear*- no goose eggs hatch and I buy from Jen C who has some gorgeous Brown Africans. But I am still determined to hatch some duck eggs to finish out what I am doing for now.

Getting some Welsummers eggs from someoneeeeee in this thread that has the prettiest Wellies and Barnies (now who could that be? LOL) and I want some more bantie BLRWs so maybe I can coordinate all the eggs and hatch them all at the same time (adjusting for times of course).

Anyone in here want some baby ducks? Free- I'm just test hatching and I don't care to keep any at this point. There will be some pure Pekins, some barnyard mixes and possibly an Appleyard or two (its a stretch but possible!) - if I can make out the SA though I might keep it. :P
I wonder who that could be?

If your bator has no fan, you want to incubate at 101.5 degrees.

Oh my! Are these sexable at hatch?
yes with the cuckoo pattern males should have a larger lighter spot. females smaller darker spot on the head. similar to crele but crele males the spot often is so large it changes the color of the chick
I will be selling my last breeding flock, Lavender Marans, one amazingly sweet rooster and 3 ready-to-lay pullets. I'll put the auctions up this weekend, HOWEVER I'd prefer they go to someone local.

If you or anyone else you know might be interested please contact me asap.

So pretty Cheryl
Thank you! It was a great hatch for shipped eggs.

Now if I can get those Black Pene eggs I set last night to hatch.....

good luck Ron. I am hoping for a good black rooster to put over my new black pene hens I am getting

What kind of incubator are you using ??

Get a couple of these:

Cut out like the picture and it will fit in the incubator turned sideways on the edge of the rail. Two should get you to 25% which is a good place to start.

Do not worry about the humidity now. It will go down by itself over the next several days and then add the storage containers. It will be fine!

I am definetely interested in your lavendar marans and will PM you. I'm still in awe of how beautiful they are since the 1st time I saw them on your website.

And now that we live in an AG zone it would be possible for me to keep the breeding pen.
