hi all -- apologies for reposting, but this question got a bit lost in the shuffle today:

any suggestions on how many eggs to put under a first-time broody? she's a basque hen, definitely LF but not a gigantic breed, my marans and silver-penciled plymouth rocks are all a bit bigger than her. don't want to overwhelm her with too many, but also want to try as many as i can in case some don't hatch!

thanks in advance!
I would give her 10 or so.

I use Sharp pruning shears. It's peaceful for the chick, but awful for the human. Dig the hole first so when it's done, you can drop it in the hole and bury it. It's never an easy thing to do.

How do you hatchers DO it? I am not even on day 10 yet and I am dying to know if I killed them all! haha!
Nothing beats watching them hatch.

I woke up to 6 pips in my barnevelder eggs and they are a day early.

That's a silver laced, this is a Tolbunt.

This is a frizzled tolbunt.

You really can't beat a teenage polish for fuggly.

A super generous customer who came to buy eggs also brought me 11 of the most beautiful Marans eggs I have ever seen. The hens are 2nd gen bev line and the roo is peddler. I have the worst luck hatching Marans eggs and I really do not want to mess these ones up. Does anyone on here raise Marans? If so, what is the best humidity to run them at? Advise please

Deanne, I've had pretty good hatch rates with my Marans (hatched 25 just recently), I just put them in with all the other eggs and they've done fine. No special treatment at all. That was 25 chicks out of about 30 eggs set.

I've got some blue Marans cooking right now that were shipped eggs

X 2 I incubated Marans eggs for a friend and kept the humidity at the usual 40% and they all hatched without any problems.

I don't do anything special with mine. I have the GQF cabinet and they seem to hatch fine.

Congratulations!

Little Peddler eggs are still rare.
