Wild turkeys in our trees! 2 sets of families. We see them around our pond sometimes too. There are 2 toms, 2 ladies and somewhere around 15-20 babies. a LOT of babies. Seems like a few less recently though. I wonder if there is anything I can for them- or just leave them alone? They have been sticking around for a couple weeks so I guess they like it here.






I had to use a really long lens - I was all the way out at 300mm to get these. Here is a pullback...

What amazed us is how well the babies can fly (and the huge turkeys themselves. they are up really high!) Crazy!

I am picking up some more chicks (from same breeder I got my other chicks from). They will have a 2 week or so age spread. Mine will be about 2 1/2 weeks old and the new batch will be about 4 days old. Will the new ones be ok with the older ones- or do I need to brood them separately. There are 6 now and I will be adding 9 more. (and I'm done getting any until next Spring maybe) Thanks guys!

Hello everyone! I have a question about a panting pullet. I have noticed all of my 13 month old chickens panting from time to time, and know that's it's normal. There is one girl, a gold sex link, that seems to pant much more than the others. She is also holding her wings away from her body. Is there anything I should be concerned about? Other diseases or conditions that might be indicated by this?

I see no other symptoms with her. Plenty of shade and water. She acts normally and is alert, but keeps panting long after the others have stopped. Maybe, like me, she just doesn't tolerate heat well?

I'm getting a little worried. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

They do that when they are hot or stressed, i'm not sure why it is with one more than the other, could be because of stress though, not sure why she would be stressed though.

My ducks do this when they are hot. Even when it feels somewhat ok to me...they pant. Especially the fatter ones. Even with shade it could be that they are just really warm? It's supposed to be like 105 in Redding today!

I have combined them when they were a week apart. Two weeks might be a stretch. Maybe keep them separated with a piece of card board for a week or so.

combine them at night when you want to try putting them together. Watch them in the morning to make sure they aren't killing each other. There will be some dominance stuff even at that age, so if they get too rough, move them apart again.

It's all so fun!

I put my teenagers in the coop with the big kids. They so wanted to go in there grow up pen still but the young ameraucana's are as big as most the other chickens my teenage icelandic is a little smaller still but he is quick. I had to get the 2 1/2 and 3 week old's out of the garage run and attach the run to the grow up coop. was just too hot and they are big enough to stay outside with a light at night. using a 75 watt plant light in my small 3x3 grow up coop.

They pant and hold their wings out when they are hot. Birds don't sweat, so they pant and get air circulation under their wings to cool themselves. Giving them shade and cold water will help too. (watermelon is good on a hot day too)


For those of you concerned with plucking a bird, as long as you scald it well, the feathers come off really easily. Two things that were strange for me the first time was the smell of the wet feathers and the body cavity being warm.

they love the watermelon. we had some today and threw the extras and the ones we ate up too them and they loved it. oh and so did our frie ndly almost pet like deer
