Thanks for the help all those who replied. Got my fingers crossed that the feed store will get silkies tomorrow! Do you guys know if it's more common for a feed store to sell a bearded or non bearded silkie? TY again.

Most feedstores sell hatchery Silkies - so you will get bearded crossed with non-bearded - for a range of anything inbetween. I love my hatchery hen, she was a great momma - but is the most pathetic fluffy bird now that I have BQ Silkies to compare her to. If you want bearded look for fluffy faces.

I would ask them which hatchery the chicks are from, then look it up online. I bought my first silkies from a feed store , and they told me they were sexed pullets. All 4 turned out to be roo's and I had to rehome them at 14 weeks. When I called the feedstore to ask about it they told me they only get silkies strait run, and the guy that told us they were sexed was wrong. This year I bought 2 Ee pullets from the same feed store, at this point one of them is a roo. It might be bad luck, but I won't buy chicks from there again.:(

Ya bantams will all be straight run . It damages them to sex the little littles. My pet chicken does it , but they kill a fair few chicks doing it. :(

Roosters don't need them................................

Hello all,

It's exciting reading about everyone's incubating and hatching experiences. I've been very jealous catching up on this thread. But now I finally have my own excitement to focus on as my 6 little chicks arrived this morning! I'm so worried about them being warm enough, this is my first time taking care of chicks. They don't seem to be going under the eco glow brooder that's in there and I don't think the heat lamp that's in there is giving off enough heat. I could only find a 150 watt infrared bulb and the temp reads low 80s in the brooder. That said, they don't appear to be too cold, sometimes they will be close together when they are sleeping but when they are up and around they didn't seem to have any issues separating and going about their business. I mainly got the heat lamp to bring up the general temp of the brooder since it's in the garage and have the eco glow as the main source of heat for the chicks. I'm not sure if I should change my set up.....I may be a little paranoid :)
I use a 75 watt planrt light ( full spectrum) for the indoor chicks . 250 watt red light out doors
I want a bird that is white and lays blue eggs. Is there such a think?
White Ameraucana or White Legbar
but hay how about a wh

ite dark egg layer?

Shhhh do not tell Jason or Chiqita...I have 11 Bresse chicks--6 weeks old and my middle daughter thinks I have 4 Cockerels and 7 pullets.....

Time to break them into Trios!

Send a pm if interested.

Debi..................come over to the dark side...........................

White legbars for one. Autosexing breed, snow white, crested and the most beautiful pure blue eggs you've ever seen. I hatched some about two weeks ago and more yesterday.
A youngster

You can see my white roo in the background (a cream up front), don't mind his dirty tail, it was muddy
your blue layers look like my brown layers

Shantih - I told you Clementine decided to name her Marans Willie (after Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, for obvious reasons) and today she was holding her and this is her direct quote "I hope we never get rid of Willie, because I love her so much and she brings me so much joy." We haven't named the other two silkies yet, but Russia is doing well. They are such beautiful chicks! It's amazing. Willie's shape is just gorgeous.

cute. love the name

Really????? Wow I never knew that. A few years back I did get a black and buff silkie from there which for our area comes from McMurray maybe? They are in Ohio. Anyway they were the rattiest looking Silkies. Very nice but butt ugly! Now I am gonna get some local. :)

That is so cool about your son! Congratulations! That's really impressive that he had the confidence to go out for a sport he wasn't familiar with, and so cool that he is doing so well! Malcolm is saying new words every day (he's 19 months old) and that has been really exciting. His sense of humor and sweetness is really coming out - he put his fingers gently on a chicken's head yesterday and kept saying "hat! hat!" and cracking up. He's finally started to grasp the concept of being gentle. It seemed like it was a long time coming. He also gave me an unsolicited hug, which was a first and so sweet. Kids are awesome.
I can totally relate to your story about your son, mine is 10 months and I look forward to when he starts talking! It is so wonderful to watch his personality develop.

I've been practicing drawing chickens. I've never been good at drawing, but I am hoping to learn. I have a very hard time with perspective. If anyone has any chicken pictures they would like me to take a shot at, though, I would love some practice. It's not high art by any means - just fun.

Hot here today! I'm really appreciating the spot Mark chose to build our coop. It gets a lot of breeze and is in the shade most of the day. They should be pretty comfy in there. How is everyone else enjoying this warm day?
Great pictures! My favorite is the lower right - looks like it has some attitude. The weather here was beyond perfect. I was in heaven all day. Speaking of which, here is a picture of my girls enjoying the sun...
