Hi Chiqita... What are "exotics"..... and I will need to get some quail from you IF SilkieRoses don't hatch. I am happy to let her have mine since they are so close to lay and she wants them for her dad. I too only got into quail because of the supposed "health" benefits of the eggs. BUT my chicken eggs aren't hatching until the end of this month so my incubator will be occupied until then.
The more I read about what is in our food the more I try not to freak out. It really does explain a lot about the high cancer rates and other mysterious autoimmune issues. That and the other "man made" products we use. On the other hand, I can't fix it all in one day, so I do the best I can. There was something else in Rice I read too...... Arsenic I think...... I will have to go see if I can find that again. However all the rice from China stands to reason it is completely contaminated given the high rate of pollution there. We aren't much better here in some cases though. Okay sorry..... went off on a tangent there.
A friend of mine's mother was just diagnosed last night with colorectal cancer...... It just doesn't surprise me anymore.
I buy organic brown rice at Costco but I repackage it and store it in the freezer so I don't know what brand it is. I'll have to check it out next time I'm at Costco. It is disgusting what manufacturers are allowed to put in our food. There are many other countries where things like dyes are banned. My 2 littlest grandkids are here today and my daughter brought a bag of food for them which included Kraft macaroni & cheese with yellow dyes 5 & 6 and Trix cereal with at least 4 different colors of dye, corn, corn syrup, canola oil and/or rice bran oil (arsenic?), etc. It is scary how desperately the kids want to eat this junk! I need to have a talk with my daughter and ask her not to send this stuff over here. And this is why we have our own flocks.
It is disgusting what the FDA qualifies as "Food" or "Food safe".
Here I am thinking "I buy Lundenburg, it's safe"......it still has arsenic, but at low levels.
OK, let's get paranoid together! Go read zodiac by Neil Stephenson. My favorite line in there was him telling someone a additive was. "Over 10 times" what was in the regulations. It was really over a million but no one could take that in over 100 got suitable outrage. Exotics are rare and unique colors and xxxxl birds. I'm going to order form James Marie farms next week and get the huge quail, some Manchurian and scarlette. I'm ordering over 50 eggs to get the better price so I was just offering to stick some other eggs in there if someone wants to try and hatch some. I won't notice 100 eggs in my smoker bator and it is holding temps like a champ. I am running it at between 99.8 and 100.1 this got better results then a tad lower. The website is James Marie I think if you want to look. Mind you quail eggs can be sensitive to shipping and I have heard to expect 40% hatches.Hi Chiqita... My first big marans hatch is happening now. I can slip you some chicks but they will be older. Are all the chicks expected to hatch large fowl?My head hen is broody and has been sitting for 10 days on 4 eggs from the farm. Monet and I candled them last night. 2 looked good, 1 was questionable, and the last one was clear. The clear one was a SPPR egg. I have 4 SPPR girls with the Langshans at the farm. I noticed that all but 1 of them show signs of the roos getting them. This egg must have come from the one SPPR with perfect back feathers. She must be the smartest of the bunch and manages to avoid the roos! Anyway, the remaining eggs are scheduled to hatch on 4/27. I would like to line up a few day old chicks to slip under her just in case these don't hatch and also to give her a few more chicks to raise. She did not go broody last year but 2 summers ago she was constantly broody. We didn't have fertile eggs at that time so we slipped three 2 day old Speckled Sussex chicks under her. She took to them and did a great job raising them plus integrating them into the flock. So, does anyone have large fowl chicks that will be hatching on the 27th or 28th? I am interested in Cream Legbars, Welsummers, Marans, and any other breed that is dual purpose & good at foraging.![]()
They do need to fight it out but I'd be there to referee in case they do decide to fight to the death. My Ameraucana roo and my new Black Copper Marans roo are BIG boys! When they got together there was blood and Big Daddy, the Ameraucana was not doing well (much to my husbands pleasure since he's the target of Big Daddy almost daily, ok, I know that's not a really appropriate emoj but it's really funny to me)! I pulled them apart, let them discuss it again and then had to go to work so I put the BCM back in his pen. Big Daddy continued to discuss it through the fence and his comb was bleeding all down his chest but once I convinced Big Daddy to let it go by just telling him to quit and nudging him away it was finally over and they don't care anymore.![]()
The one night I go try to go to sleep at a reasonable hour, you guys have a party!![]()
I bought the Brinsea Octagon 20 w/humidity pump (wish I would have got the 40 but with the $450 price tag I chickened out) and I can't believe how awesome it is. After my exhausting experience with a Little Giant I swore I would NEVER hatch again!![]()
It's been running ever since! My second hatch is going into lockdown today and all the grandkids are coming for another hatching party this weekend. Watching them see these chicks get themselves out is heartwarming. My 4 year old grandson looked up at me with tears in his eyes and whispered "mimi"....he had no words for what he was seeing.
I know alot of people use the styrofoam but I am more of a set it and forget it, sit back and watch kind of girl!
Geez, I stay up every night, sometimes into the wee hours of the morning, talking to myself, keeping this thread active......I personally took this thread into the 20K #'s in the middle of the dark night and I never make the list!!!! Well, at least I don't think so, I don't ever look at it......if I do, in that case, disregard the dramatic post!![]()

Kim, maybe try putting something around her nest so it's not so easy for the others to get use to. If she quits because they move her eggs I'll bet she'll quit being moved. I'll bet she finds a better place next time anyway. They're pretty smart for such tiny little brains.

Glad they're hatching out for you. The next time will be much easier on you!![]()
I have an older Italian woman who comes into the wine bar with her daughter and husband and boy do they have stories. One is that they would tap a whole into the end of the eggs and suck them out raw. It was during the war and they had very little source of nutricianal food.
My aunt died of uterine cancer, my cousin and another aunt had breast cancer, my brother died 5 years ago at 40 to cancer.....my daughter has taken a very serious committment to feed her family in a prevenative way she's so afraid after watching her uncle die. I hope to have time to do more then our chickens and garden. In the last year I have had 2 cancer scares and am waiting on a biopsy as we speak. I'll admit I'm afraid of the diagnosis.....after watching someone go through cancer...it's just horrible. I have two very close friends with breast cancer right now....both of them are in their late 40's! One is bald right now and the other is preparing....OK, I'm going to go back and read the fasizzle post and LOL and then go see my chickens....oh, and put the hatch in lockdown! Life is happening right now, no need to dwell on the schedule!
Well that stinks. Where did you get your eggs from? Anyway, I am home this Sat and Sun if you wanna come get them if you need too. As for keeping them in the house.... I am just not sure. They do stink on the shavings, and I threw in a couple handfuls of the Sweet PDZ two nights ago and mixed it in with fresh shavings and they loved kicking it all up an rolling around in it. I thought one was dead, but no, it was just in a hole dust bathing in the shavings and PDZ and letting the others walk all over it.I just candled, Ali.... out of 33 I'm going to give 9 until Friday
My friend in Seattle just got a diagnosis of inflammatory breast cancer. I'm trying to get her to start quail in her apartment right now. She needs something to focus on & the benefits are great!!
I think in a smoothie they wouldn't be bad. I just don't like the idea of slimy things slipping down my throat.Me either, but my step mom did & she said it wasn't bad!! lol. I hard boil them & the kids love them!!
Thank you for the offer. This hen is particular and smart so a couple days older would work but not 10 days older.OK, let's get paranoid together! Go read zodiac by Neil Stephenson. I am still waiting patiently for your Langshans to be ready for hatching eggsThank you for the offer. This hen is particular and smart so a couple days older would work but not 10 days older.Yes, they are 2 Langshans and one SPPR/Langshan cross. We will candle them again in 7 days and hopefully at least 2 of them will have continued to develop.![]()
So are the huge quail as freaky as the smaller quail? I put a net over my redneck box brooder for them and I see them popping up trying to get out but the net holds them down. Looks a little like popcorn in there. Based on what PetRock is saying about her quail, I am glad I got the Coturnix. Even they are bananas but apparently not as bad as the Bob's.OK, let's get paranoid together! Go read zodiac by Neil Stephenson. My favorite line in there was him telling someone a additive was. My hens would accept a one legged rat if it peeped. But marans are bruisers so I'd worry more about them stealing all the room under the hen. I don't raise them with anything small anymore. Bdm, I missed your post!! I also wish you good luck. I have a history of cancer in my family but it has never killed anyone so it is less scary. I do expect to loose a breast someday however.Thank you for the offer.
