California - Northern

This is wonderful. I know where many of you are located. We are above Placerville only recently coming from Sacramento after 8 years. We lived in Watsonville, between Monterey and Santa Cruz all our lives. I called it central CA. It is exciting to know each of you. This is actually our first year having chickens. We would like to move to Sanora or Mariposa maybe next year if we find someone who will rent to us with chickens!

HI!!! Welcome to the best thread on BYC....

This thread moves so fast, in so many directions I wanted to reask some questions from a couple of pages back....

For those of you who use leg bands.....where do you order them and what type do you like?

Is my 3 week old lone chick from my last hatch going to be able to be with my hatch that is hatching this weekend? Poor thing is too small to go out with the big girls (which she spends time with in the mornings before I go to work) but would be nice if she had some company with the new ones. She's a Olive Egger from my Blue Copper Marans so has some size to her.

OK, I forgot the other question....but that reminds me, I need to pick up my bio-identicals! Is it hot in here?

Edited because I remembered my other question....can I change my screen name without starting a whole new account? I searched it and found a reference that said a mod could do it for you but it was dated 2010 so that was the old format, does anyone know if I can do it now? I want to change to my farms name High 'N Dry Farm.

Hey, I know I typed an answer to all those questions a couple of days ago.

I use colored zipties, but you have to be very careful to check them at least weekly and put on a new one as the chick grows. You can lose a foot otherwise. I also currently have 5 araucana chicks running around wearing vetwrap on their leg.

As long as they are reasonably the same size, it's fine. I think you're just hatching BCM's. They are bruisers, so they should be fine with a chick a little older.

Contact a moderator. You're allowed to change once.

I think that people are using the ovation system inappropriately - not the way that it was intended.

People are using it similar to the "Like" button on Facebook, giving thumbs up when they like the post. From the way that I read the intention, the thumbs up should be reserved for posts that are more than that.
Quote:
So, the way that I understand it, the thumbs up is for posts that are informational - educational - posts that would be helpful to all or most BYCers.

The way that it's being used is more like a popularity contest. I understand Pam's reaction because I had the same feeling when the ovations first started. I purposely was trying to find people who needed help and would answer them, trying to resolve their issue. Then I would check the ovations the next day. I got frustrated when I saw that the popular BYC members were getting ovations for whatever it was they posted that day. It didn't seem to matter whether it was helpful or not. Some were even snide or political. What seemed to matter wasn't what was being said but who said it. I soon stopped looking at the most ovations list. I have to admit, I got the most ovations for my lamb picture and I was so happy to finally get some ovations. But, again, that's not what the ovations are supposed to be about.

Happy Chooks or any moderator, am I off base on this?

Here is the thread: post #1
Yes Kim that is correct! I make sure to give a thumbs up to helpful posts. I am sorry if I gave the impression that we should pump up a post just to get it in the ovation statistics. I meant to remind us to give a thumbs up when we see a helpful post.

The ovation system also does not register all thumbs up either. Their is a Unique factor involved so they don't count or not as much if, for example I kept giving a thumbs ups to the same people all the time. so it is not a popularity number rather a you are helpful thing.

I too have gone to great lengths to help someone with a problem and not gotten a thumbs up. I don't help to get a thumbs up but it is nice to get them.

brief broody update: the one that was moved last night that was NOT sitting on her nest this morning, IS sitting on it now that i'm home from work this afternoon, and seems quite contented -- so that's a huge relief.

so she's started today on Chiqita's eggs, i've got a few from Deann that will go, together with shipped eggs from Molly, tomorrow under the broody australorp -- my SPPR has about 12 days to go to hatch and Eleanor the basque should be hatching on/around this sunday! so much anticipation of baby chicks!!!

and quick question: Molly's eggs are being sent, since i don't have time this week to make the drive -- should i let them "rest" for a day, after they arrive, before putting them under the broody australorp, or can they start cooking right away?

thanks!

Congrats! Sorry about the others.
Quote: I've made homemade Caesar salad dressing with my chicken eggs. You use them raw in that. Unless you have salmonella in your flock, they won't make you sick. Most backyard flocks don't have salmonella - it's usually more of an issue with factory farming.
I do have a question. I have 3 chicken eggs setup hatch this Monday and 3 more set to hatch the following weekend. I had to jack the humidity up for the ducks - will this hurt my chicken eggs?
I don't think it will be an issue.

Marans to Marans could work. My marans try and eat younger chickens feet so I dunno. Feet worms ( ie toes) are the most popular baby chicken treat around here, have to look out for toe trauma.
And you all know that I won't be slurping any oysters on the half shell, either! Double yuck!!!

Thems fighting words! I love oysters ( BDM, restaurant Depot has some very good oysters, you should go get some!)
Seriously! I only buy Cherrios for my daughter. None of that sugar cereal.
Yes, but do we know cherioos are not sourcing the oats from China? THAT is what is freaking me out. Any processed food could be sourced from anywhere, and China has taken over a ginormous part of the food chain for processed food ( all of the sliced strawberries, of all things, and most of the garlic) google throw it out the window china and read some of the articles. Of course the actual site is in mandarin, so don't go there :D.
Does anyone know how to research where companies are sourcing things? Or is there no way to even do so?

!!! now THAT i didn't expect. My favorite mechanic was a New Zeelander who used to work for nascar. he was crushed by a car one afternoon when the lift thing failed :(. He had the most interesting set of people at his funeral.

I went and picked up my chicks a was hatching for me. I have polish and mille flur d'uccles! No seramas hatched, poor things. There is one chick I think might be a crele polish ( aka sock puppet chicken) I am very excited about it. I may have to keep her!

A is hatching for a new store in Oakland and has over 100 eggs due to hatch next week. If anyone is looking for some exotics birds it is worth taking a look. I think she has maybe a dz or 2 different types, all harder to find from breeders. Of course do I remember the NAME of the store? noooo! I'm going some time next week to help her mark and vaccinate the chicks and pick up my TURKEY POULTS! Poor pumpkins is trying to hatch chicken eggs at the moment, waiting for the turkeys to get here. She actually stole the eggs due to hatch the next 3 days and wont give them back, so I'M having to steal the chicks from her so she keeps sitting. This is very hazardous and I look like I have been battling a porcupine. Silver also tried to reach over and bite me, but she is too small. One of my broodie silkies abandoned her double box ( sitting with another girl) to steal 2 of sparkles chicks. She went INTO sparkles box, tucked 2 chicks under her arm, and booked.
Poor pretty could not sit on all the remaining horde ( she had somehow gotten 24 eggs, I guess someone IS laying in that pen) so I took 17 eggs of indeterminate age and put them in hatcher. If I can find my fricking candler I will see what ones can go in the incubator, the hatcher is crazy looking right now.

Ill try to get some pictures of the new babies, and the RP turkey that is with them, tonight. I don't usually mix species, but I'm shy a pen so I have baby quail, Turkeys and bantams all together. The quail and the turkey get along the best, who would have thunk!
