I really want some silvers! I need to email Jean (Pips&Peeps) and see if she can send me some eggs before I quit hatching for this year!

Did you post pictures of the EE chicks and I missed it?

Very Cute Ron, Blue Australorps... I bet they are going to grow out stunning

I think so too. I tried to get these last year but Chester Hupp had a tragedy--most of his chickens came down with an illness and had to be culled!

I am very happy that he got them going again.

Yes for both reasons and especially for late hatchers like Marans--Humidity and to make sure they get the air cell the correct size. Marans need more time but all eggs can benefit from waiting. My best hatches have been when they pip before I get them into the hatcher. One of the big hatching experts on the hatching threads(Super Chemical Girl, Chooks Chicks or Happy Chooks) waits until they see the first pip and then locks them down. I am not that brave, so I lock down on day 19.

Thank you for answering so quickly.

Now that you mention the "correct size" what is the visual correct size? I didn't weight before I set them. Didn't think about it until several days later. Doh!

I look at the hatching 101 but none of mine look perfect like that.

Is it something like a quarter of the egg or a third of the egg? If it is a third of the egg I am in trouble.

There needs to be enough room for the chick to pip into the air cell. Shipped eggs get weird horse shoe air cells so it is hard to tell how big it really is. If the chick pips in the wrong spot--because the air cell is weird--then it can break a blood vessel and bleed to death or drown.

Don't worry too much about the size--It will get a lot bigger in the last couple of days before hatch time.

Quote: They did get locked down on day 19 because I was busy and because I set late in the evening so I didn't feel bad about the delay. Should I up the temp and humidity for the rest of this hatch? And I should clarify that I picked up the other eggs so only one egg is from my flock. So shipped and picked up.....do you count eggs that traveled in the car for an hour to be the same as your own flock?

At the end of the last hatch I had three prefect ready to go chicks. I'm not sure why they didn't hatch. How do you decide why? I think there was a normal amount of fluid, not gooey but the yolk was still there. Is there somewhere with pictures of quiters to decide why they didn't hatch?

OK, the wind is blowing like crazy and now I'm afraid we'll lose power....I have babies in the brooder, all the eggs in the incubator and three chickens in the garden without cover that I'm afraid will be relocated! And my husband and I are both sick with fever/flu/achey......aargh. So if non of my posts today made sense....it's the fever!

Awe, just checked the eggs and I have a zipper from each side....they look like they're in a race! Guess I won't go to bed now after all....I need to get a leg band on one before I lose track of where they came from....please pass the Prosecco.

I will get some pictures and information on late quitters for you. They were all so close!
