We had mice relocating the dog food to the top of the pick-ups engine. I've found staches in the attic, Eric's old boots, plastic cups, anything that would hold dog food or Super Scratch. It's mainly outside now and I have a mouse that cleans up anything I drop on the floor of the feed room. That reminds me, I've got to unload 250 lbs. of feed tomorrow morning, hope it's not frosty.
Silkies and showgirls are fried ( a little tough) or soup.
I take roosters back. One has to do something with them!
Process them painlessly and with love I say!
Quote: Yes, I can understand that if you take roosters back. I guess Owl should be doubly grateful to his first owner.. and I am grateful too - he is such a good boy.
I agree, I prefer my birds with feathers or .. fuzzy feathers (only LOOKS like hair on those sillies). I did see a picture of the poor nekkid chickens.. and it was.. odd.
There was a really funny one of a turken broody who had lost almost all her feathers chasing off an intruder to "her" chick.. it was hilarious!
Thanks OR4HMom - I didn't realize they stopped breeding for that because the skin got too tough. It does make sense though - even though the Naked Necks do not have many feathers they can withstand the cold. Tough skin would explain that!
If my memory serves, the creators of NN were doing just that, then they found that the skin became so tough without the feathers they put some back on the birds.
Weird, my multi quote function isn't working.
Ali707 - your showgirl comment had me
Here's a couple updates on my end...
I made this over the weekend for a friend's wedding shower gift...
And a couple pics of the babies... not so much babies anymore! They are 4.5 weeks now and I think I'm starting to see who is a boy and girl. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that my favorites are girls. I started giving them outside time in a makeshift run.
One of my favorites... Lucy
The hen who was attacked by the bobcat is totally healed!
I can't believe how quickly she recovered. She is now regrowing her feathers where they were torn out, the poor thing has been looking kind of silly with a bald back, choppy neck, and 3 tail feathers!
Someone earlier mentioned being a country girl in the city... well I'm the opposite! I'm an urban girl recently transplanted in the woods! I had an ongoing issue with a mouse building nests in my car heater and it finally escalated last weekend when I turned on my heater and heard another loud thumping sound. I quickly turned it off but a few days later this TERRIBLE smell developed.
So I left the windows open last night and this morning there was a torn open bag of nuts on my driver's seat. Looks like some raccoon or skunk had a party in there last night - but I digress.
The stink was completely unbearable today, I had to drive with the windows down and even then it was bad. Its a good thing we have nice weather at the moment! DH took apart the system and found a maggot-filled mouse carcass somewhere in the vent. EWWWWWW.
I'm just glad he got it! I hope this solves that stink issue. Ugh.
OK I am trying to remember all the questions..laura I'm betting if she is off the eggs you had one chick hatch early. You should have 3 days after the first hatch. Chicks don't have to eat so if she can reach the food she won't move. After 3 days the remaining eggs are in jeporody.
In your position I would stick the eggs under the next broodies and watch for chicks. If any hatch pull them and stick them with the already hatched hens brood. The one still sitting seems to stay if they don't have chicks. I may or may not have done that a lot. Lol.
I should have told you to watch and move the extra eggs if she is a mover. Some hens can't count to 3.
will see what she's up to this morning -- i realize that the chicks don't HAVE to eat, but Eleanor seems very insistent on teaching them to! and if these eggs don't work out, there are a bunch of araucanas due to hopefully hatch next monday. and then YOUR eggs are a week after that!
We had a conversation last night about the likelihood of a guy going to buy maxi pads in the store and saying it was for his chickens..... or his eggs.....
It was a great local's restaurant, yum! I hatched three more (I think) SPPR over the weekend. I don't think there are any in next weekend's hatch. And now one of my girls has gone broody, so there will be less eggs. I love my paint showgirls. They are my favorite, I just had two more hatch.
Debs favorite picture of her showgirls shows the problem. The one with its butt o the camera has a rim of skin around it. Later the fluff will grow longer and seal the hole. But it will never grow feathers there.
Quote: I'm not sure which picture you're referring to, but I'll post a "rear end" picture of my new SG chick. I keep thinking she has a poopy butt that needs washing, but when I pick her up it's just black skin. Funny little thing!
