California - Northern

I sure felt silly yesterday. MIL had a dentist appt., she had to have her sweater. 94° and I'm walking around with a sweater over my arm.

Everyone try and stay cool today! I should be making jams but not today!

My girls had not eaten since late morning(but they did spend quite a while in the yard this afternoon). Went to grab their new bag of food out of my car to realize I'd locked the keys in the car. So I called roadside assistance, at 11:30pm and waited until past 12:20am, so I could feed my chicks before I went to bed. The things I do for my pets...

Hugs:) I did it too yesterday ,LOL. I locked my keys in the car while in Anderson at Walmart. My car was running with $400 in groceries in it, low on gas ( that was my next stop) and my son was getting out of school soon. It was so hot that my car wanted to overheat running like that sitting in the sun. $65 for the locksmith to take 20 seconds get the door open. Luckily he arrived quickly in less than 30 minutes.

The price is if you bulk buy--He bought a bunch of 50# bags. I will be able to share with him but he wants to make sure they can keep getting the King feed. I hope so--it is a great price!

Looks like there is a branch in Folsom. I drive 1 hour to get to s&w in Carson and they have nothing gmo free and have never heard of king. So I might as well venture off the hill In The other direction.
Where does everyone In The foothills get the best deals at?

a few pictures from yesterday afternoon:

i hacked a whole bunch of coyote brush out & uncovered this lovely sitting area of old branches on the edge of my meadow, perfect place for watching chicken tv! the girls seem to approve...

my cat sophie watching chicken tv -- that's the whole flock at this point, except for Daisy & her five chicks, who were having a snack in the coop.

and today my handy-man guy is coming to give me an estimate on expanding the coop! i'm thinking of adding two 8x8' pens to one side of the current 8x12' space -- so i'll have more flexibility with separating age groups or breeders or broodies or whatever. and i may be getting two silver campine pullets from Shannon in Vacaville... chicken math continues!

and Grandmas Basket (sorry i don't know your real name), your coop is looking fabulous! i'm taking inspiration from your photo...

Dear Husband relaxing watching the chicks explore their new urban run/coop. We finally got the door built and on this afternoon! Became a race to complete this project before hyper heat hit. Looks like Tilly, Inga, and Ting will be happy inhabitants. We do have 2 more Bantam Cochin chicks, one Blue and one Frizzle, who look more like males every day. Will evict the boys out once they crow.
Beautiful coop!

I wish I could be making jam! I can't seem to find anyone local with trees of anything that is ripe!
Mine went into the freezer last year. When in season, I weigh it out into batches and vaccum seal it. If only that worked for cucumbers! It's rough when it's 105° outside and that feels cool when I step out of the canning kitchen.

Wow, I need to downsize some chickens.  We buy half a pallet (20 50# bags) at a time.  That lasts at most two weeks.

:idunno

I would go in if it was within a few hours and just buy for the whole season...

OMG, I have turkeys hatching again.  What possessed me to set so many turkey eggs this year (I can tell you, it was DH constantly saying he wanted me to hatch ALL the turkeys)?  I probably have 40ish turkeys growing out right now (plus my 12 adults - sold one).  I sold a few poults, I need to put up another ad  I've got 24 eggs locked down - 8 have already hatched and some more still cooking on the other shelves.

I've sold a few dozen for eating, and we've eaten about a dozen ourselves.  There are probably another 1-2 dozen in my egg stash.  The hens are finally stopping for the year.  Instead of 6-7 eggs per day, I'm getting 1 or 2.

This current batch of poults includes a couple of RP so far.  Up to now I've only gotten slates and blacks.

Do you do turkey day turkeys?

here are two of my own hatchlings... The Polish/Dorking and Little Ray or Rae Dawn I think they are both girls they will be 6 weeks old tomorrow. Gender check please!!!!

Dont know why this one came out so small but it's the clearest of its profile...Looking girlish??

She has a cute crest. It just started to grow about 10 days ago

Another wattle free small comb shot. I know next to nothing about Polish but hope someone who does will give me good news about this ones gender. She is Curly's buddy.
