California - Northern

and here are some Icelandic shots: These guys all had flat combs when I got them so that makes it tough but you will see in one pic how pink one of them is at this pt and by comparison at least two others and maybe all three look more girly.

Suspected Girl^

other suspected girl...she is crested!!!!! ^^

same bird ^^^
VVV

Here is my boy. I have thought so all along based on behavior now look at that comb! What do you call that? It looks like a knob of bubble gum? ETA. He will come up to me and wait for treats and even hop on my lap. The other three grab and dash and approach really furtively. His comb is the only one blown up like this the other three are still pretty flat.

In the back is another suspected girl her comb is basically black and undeveloped in the foreground is a ?? Pinker comb than the other two but not as big as its hatchmate. Little Porking on the right. Her name will be Petunia if she is a she.

FYI taking close ups of Icelandics is a two person job. They are not fond of holding still for the camera so I had to get these from a distance. Any help will be appreciated. I need to unload my extras on CL and would like to be more sure of what I am telling people these guys are.

Re the heat. If you don't have a mister you can make them a puddle/damp area. The little ones love scratching in it and laying in it and pecking at it.

Did my best to get "What sex is this chick?" pics for you guys. I have to send them from my phone to my email then upload them here but will get them up today. Wanted to grow out and process the extra roosters but the pen I was going to use is no longer available..chicken math. I think I only have 4 or 5 of them. I may take them to the feed store and just hope that someone will be good to them before they are processed :(

Deanne was it you who got the interesting responses to your CL ad? I got a series of semi literate solicitations from some guy, nothing overt, over my SFH add. Admittedly the title is "Rare and Beautiful Swedish Flower Hen Cockerel/Rooster" apparently the fact that it included pics and was in the farm and garden section was insufficient evidence for the guy who wanted to "get something going" and took "a chance on me by sending me his real contact info."

uhhhhhh Thanks???? My husband said that using the word "cockerel" was my downfall and that I should refer to them as "young roosters" in the future.

Sheesh.

H is taking me away for our Anniversary which was in May but we postponed on account of chicken needs. We are headed to Mar Vista Cottages which is between Pt Arena and Gualala. They deliver fresh eggs to your porch every morning of your stay from their mixed flock and welcome guests into their gardens to pick what ever they want to eat.

H made all the plans. Do I know how to pick em or what???
CL can bring out some interesting people......but I use cockerel in my ad. I figure I get more chicken educated people if they know what a pullet and a cockerel all. But of course, then you those desperately interesting people!
Quote: This is why I continue to pay for OnStar! Isn't there some type of app for unlocking your car door? At least your car was running with all those groceries in there!
here are two of my own hatchlings... The Polish/Dorking and Little Ray or Rae Dawn I think they are both girls they will be 6 weeks old tomorrow. Gender check please!!!!

She has a cute crest. It just started to grow about 10 days ago

Another wattle free small comb shot. I know next to nothing about Polish but hope someone who does will give me good news about this ones gender. She is Curly's buddy.

What do you think? I know it's hard b/c little ray is laying down but I hope you can tell.
Pretty hard to tell at this age but this one looks like a girl....but not a Polish. The crest normally is like a big cotton ball on their head, but a cutie!

Ended up with 18 out of 24. 2 of the six that didn't hatch were early quitters but the other 4 were perfectly formed chicks.

I just can't figure out why I'm losing them and why my hatches are late. One chick look a little like it was shrink wrapped, which could be because when I was fooling with the wayward zipper, two other eggs had zipped and it shrunk wrapped them but I helped them out and they're fine and while I was waiting for those two to hatch another hatched overnight that was perfectly fine.

The other 3 hadn't even pipped internally. I have a broody going right now so I'm going to take some time to check the temps and see if any changes need to be made. The company says it comes calibrated from Brinsea and shouldn't need any changes but every couple of years.

Here's the Polish from this hatch:

And a couple of the EE's. I've forgotten just how cute these little puff balls are!

Ah a chick show!

Chicken TV is my favorite entertainment. DH and I do this all the time, but it's usually at the end of the work/chore day with a cocktail in our hands. Lately it's been on the deck to oversee the grazing of the goslings/ducklings on the back lawn.
Our coop and run are framed in my living room window and I can watch the action from inside the house. But that cuts down on their captivating sound effects, so we will be spending more time outside for certain. Your description of cocktails in hand inspires us. Now to practice gracefully navigating to the backyard without spilling my martini!

My daughter's husband proposed during a stay at Mar Vista, I think it was the fresh eggs that inspired him! They returned for their 3rd anniversary while expecting my granddaughter.

Thanks to all for the coop/run reviews.

Yep...like my mom says, "It takes all kinds"

My little white chick is a polish dorking mix according to the egg seller. Dorking dad Polish mama

Our 7 week old Cochin Bantams (thanks to Miss Molly). We are fairly certain only 1 is a pullet - so we finally named her Ting. Much better than calling her by generic "black". She's the smallest but most athletic of all 3. This is her first encounter with an earthworm. In this shot, she got brave enough to touch it, then let go. Seconds later the others swarmed and the worm passed so many beaks I'm not sure if Ting got a piece. But she was the first to spot it, so bonus points earned.

These are the two boys. Blue in the rear is dominate. Frizzle in the front is WAAAY slower that the rest in feathering out. I'm not sure what to call his pattern. Both these suspected boys are going to have to go. I haven't heard any crows yet, so am enjoying the time we have left. And, of course, until that happens, I have a shred of hope I'm wrong about the gender.

High and dry - if your hatches are late, your temps are low. Get a brinsea spot check and check the temps.

Yummmmmmm, cosmopolitan. One of my favorites. I haven't had a drink in over a month. (I've been dropping weight, so I cut out the extra calories of alcohol) now I want one!
