California - Northern

She was eggs from Stockton so born in February.
How old is your MFL?  I have two, one the normal red color and one that apparently is a recessive gene.  She is black.  I thought she was a Swedish Flower, but nope, some sort of recessive thing going on I guess according to Deann.

Wow, I did not know that about white chickens and hawks. One of the ones that was killed was one of Deb's Lakkenvelders. I am super sad. I loved that bird - she was sooo friendly. She was white with a black neck so I guess her neck was her doom.

The fishing line is a great idea for one of the pens. It is 30 by 150 and I was considering putting wire over the top. Fishing line will be much more affordable. Unfortunately, the layer layer field is 1/2 acre so there is not much I can do there. They chickens all run into the coop for safety. They are traumatized.

What about plastic netting over the pen? You could make lots of hiding places for them. Small low shed type buildings scattered over the field.

I should have gotten some Red Stars........I am never going to have eggs!
Bresse and the Blue Egg layers start the same time as the Red Stars. 18 to 20 weeks. Australops start at 22 to 25 weeks.

Wellsummers? When they are good and ready.....

She should lay an egg for you soon! They lay very nice eggs too.

I have three of them that are 2.5 years old and going strong.

Um... since Jason lost his WHITE rooster to hawk, and hawks will eat WHITE rabbits in a heartbeat - I sort of doubt this statement. White is actually easier to see...

However, my mother swears that her BLACK chickens are safe from hawks (she looses the other colors easily - especially the white) because they look like crows, and hawks think twice about attacking crows...

Interesting how stories are started, huh?

Deb and I would say that the Black chickens are naturally superior, so they are harder for the Hawk to catch.

To be fair, Jason't White Rooster was likely defending the Crele Hens.

X 2. Its not too hard to reset. I'm so sorry you are loosing your babies.

Time to get a trap and wet cat food and ask deb wth to do with a skunk.

Yeah, skunks need to go. Mr. Stinky that was moved to feed the local vultures has been reduced to hide, fur and a spinal cord. I've checked on him several times and watched the local diners.

Yes, I'm not buying the white or black stories. White is like a beacon. They say that's why naturally occurring albino wildlife does not survive, too visible to predators. I don't think they care want color their dinner is, they just want to catch and eat. As far as black, I put two full grown black Cayuga ducks into a very tall pen, within a few days a hawk flew in and ate one of them right in the pen.

Black/white, it's all food to them.

Deanne when convenient, I can certainly find another lakenvelder pullet for you.
