they look so vigorous, Ron!

i've managed to get a few pictures of Amelia #2 and her new hatchlings -- will definitely have to get some better ones, but here's what i've got for now -- they're in a not-easy-to-reach-with-a-camera nestbox. the eggs came from some combination of a cream legbar, two basques, one SPPR, and one australorp, all fertilized by Max the SFH -- not sure who is who yet, although one (probably one of the CL/SFH crosses) has a GIANT white dot on it's head -- probably a boy!

Amelia #2 and FOUR chicks, there might still be another resting underneath her? two definitely did not make it through hatching, i've removed those, and there were 8 eggs originally.

judging by the empty eggshells, one of the hatchlings is definitely a Daisy Jr. (yay!!!), and it might be this one, i remember Daisy (a black australorp) had a lot of white on her face/head as a chick

possible-Daisy Jr. says hello!

another dark chick with a gorgeously brown head
Yay for Daisy, Jr.!

That color pattern is correct for E (Extended black) based blacks - which is what Daisy was - so I think you guessed right. The Brown headed one is "helmeted" and probably eb based. Perhaps the Legbars or the Basque, not familiar with their genetic codes.. yet.

Your chicks look amazing!

I had to work to catch them today. Basque are usually easier to catch. They are wonderful!

thanks for the genetics!! since the father for all of them is a SFH, i fully expect the coloration to be wild & perhaps way off from the moms -- the Max Jr that hatched earlier this year (a CCL/SFH cross, i've since given the pullet to a friend) had quite wild feathering, nothing like an SFH *or* a CCL (although she had a little black crest from her mom):

but hatching update: Amelia #2 got up off the nest for a brief drink of water (then got right back on), and so i was finally able to count: SIX chicks, one with a still-damp head, and one unhatched egg (I already removed the one that died mid-hatch, thought there were two but perhaps they were two halves of a single quitter?). not bad for a first-time mama! (and what a difference having not-shipped eggs makes!)

The UofA Blue Egg layers are starting to be very good egg layers. They have been laying eggs for about 3 weeks now and I am getting 2 to 3 eggs from the 4 of them each day. One of them is laying a double yolked egg! A very pure blue Double Yolked egg!

wow!! between broodies and molting, egg production here is wayyyyy down, only about 2 a day at this point -- but your post made me figure out the mystery of the egg count in Amelia #2's nest -- i'd forgotten (!) that i'd drawn a line around all the eggs i set, to distinguish them from recently-laid ones -- so the extra was just laid in there by somebody, yesterday or today.

so, final tally, out of 8 eggs, two quit mid-hatch, and six are cute fuzzy chicks!

my 14 year old kitty got out a few days ago. ugh. He has never really been out except the one or two times he's escaped ,

Come home soon Anakin

Have you found your boy yet Jason? When two of my house cats got out, one hid in a culvert and the other under a shed for two days. Too scared to come out until they saw me, even though I was calling them.
