California - Northern

oh and Amelia #2 and Bella the SPPR have totally settled into co-raising the six cross-breed chicks -- they were ushering them around the coop's run this afternoon, and the settled down for a rest side by side, each with three chicks tucked under her wings. they crack me up.

Haha well I will be hatching every egg I get from them so you're in luck. My husband asked if they laid golden eggs ;)

Chickengirl were they laying before the shipping? English corps can be up to a year old before they lay. My jubilees are not pinking up yet and they were born in February. ( but I did find a tan egg today so it is possible they just fooled me...) my showgirls took a full month before anyone played and 2 before all the girls had played and 4 before they were getting fertile.

Yes they were greenfires original imports so they're just now 2 years old and were laying for them.

DD and I are off to Salem this evening. State fair poultry is tomorrow morning, she'll be happy to get a call back. We'll see how the bbs orp bantam does in conformation. He was a call back last year but he was still young. We think we have a new judge this year. I'm hoping for a smaller group of kids competing this year since when she's done I get to drive her to Brookings for a 4-H camping trip. We will be delivering ice cream.

I need a week at home-way to many boys here crowing and no time to get them on craigslist to get them gone.

Another local gal that I know through my chicken FB page asked me about Vet Rx. She said that she had 3 sneezing hens. any information I can pass on?

ORMom Thanks for the Clarification an uniforms. So are the Scarf and the Hat no longer required either? good Luck to your DD. I like Salem. My DD seriously considered Willamette...or rather they made her such a great offer that I seriously considered Willamette

Good luck to your daughter! I would love to go deliver ice cream in Brookings.

Sneezing is not good--it is usually a respiratory disease and if it is a virus then anti biotics do not help.

a good vitamin would be a good idea and separate any that show symptoms. If one dies get them to UCD for a Necropsy. I think the current anti biotic is Valbazen.

Dawg53 recently posted:

Antibiotics have egg withdrawal times, some as long as 3 weeks or more. Antibiotics will NOT treat viral diseases. Additionally wheezing and sneezing is indicative of a respiratory disease as in the OP's rooster situation. Chickens can be treated for respiratory diseases, but are NEVER cured of the disease and they remain CARRIERS and can easily spread it to other birds. It's best to cull, disinfect and start over.

He posted this in April of this year. There are a lot of different thoughts and opinions on this subject though.

In answer to Tommysgirls question. Here in Oregon for 4-H dark pants are required except dogs and horses. They have loosened up on white shirts but they must be long sleeved and buttoned up. Here in Josephine county some of us have reputations for being mean, we adhere to the dress code when the kids are going into the rings.

Around here the kids all dress in full whites and all the details, ie. hat must be worn properly or folded over belt, if you have belt loops, you must have a belt and so on.

We always tell the kids, you get into that auction ring and that old farmer is going to look at you. His thought will be "I had to wear all whites!"

I believe the exception is horse (dark denim pants with white shirt), but we have no horse group here during fair.

FFA of course get to dress in dark, but they have to wear those HOT jackets!

As for the dress, we tell the kids to think of it as a job interview! When at the Red Bluff show DD said she was glad she didn't have to wear all white. One of the bigger fund raiser here is Adult swine showmanship. The kids sign up adults for a couple of bucks and the adult buy out is 20.00. Of course as soon as you buy out another one signs you up! The hog lice saved me this year, they didn't have it. I had my show clothes ready though.

I do feel bad for the FFA kids, it is hot here for fair, usually in the 90's and they are in those jackets. We have water at the ready!
