my mom & her partner powell were able to get an appointment to visit their house outside of Groveland yesterday, in the region where the Rim Fire first started -- their two next-door neighbors were the first residences to be destroyed by the fire, but through the amazing efforts of the firefighters and the great job mom & powell have done over the years maintaining a defendable space (thinning/removing trees etc), the fire literally burned right up to their doorstep, but the house was not harmed.
they only were given 45 minutes to visit the property, and mom has posted some photos -- it's really fascinating to see how patchy the fire was in those early stages, and how in places where fuel loads were low, it passed through quickly, burning the underbrush but not the trees themselves. mom's meadow is burnt, but the trees are singed but otherwise unharmed.
and what's extra amazing is this is the SECOND forest fire to burn through across their 12-acre property -- the Pilot Fire in 1999 came up the hill behind their house but was turned just as it got there -- and now this one. i hope all of you who live in the Sierras or other wooded areas make sure to work on that defendable space idea around your house -- what a difference it can make!

Where is that? So incredibly beautiful!Ready for some landscapes?
Really? I never would have guessed that. What on earth do little quail people have to be snarky about?I am a wimp and those quail threads can be mean! They seem to be looking to pick a fight.
DH has stressed this again and again. He could not believe how many houses in that region did not have defendable space. I didn't realize that you don't have to cut the trees down , just trim them up 6 feet from the ground, so the fire burns under and right past the trees. I'm so glad that your mom's place is still standing.my mom & her partner powell were able to get an appointment to visit their house outside of Groveland yesterday, in the region where the Rim Fire first started -- their two next-door neighbors were the first residences to be destroyed by the fire, but through the amazing efforts of the firefighters and the great job mom & powell have done over the years maintaining a defendable space (thinning/removing trees etc), the fire literally burned right up to their doorstep, but the house was not harmed.

I have my quail in 2 stacked pens above my chicks in my grow-out aviary. The chicks got cocci and then the quail got it. All of the chicks recovered but I lost 7 out of 19 bobwhites. DH is pushing for a quail processing day and then the pens will only be used for grow out chicks. It doesn't look like I will probably be raising quail.Lolololol. This is the safe zone. Why do you think I spend my time here? I am a wimp and those quail threads can be mean! They seem to be looking to pick a fight.
I have this concern too because as soon as I get moved I will hopefully be getting some of Chiquita's jumbo eggs![]()
I understand the quail can still get issues even from being above the chickens because poop particles can be air born.
However, like you say there are people that seem to be fine letting them coexist but others say they have just dodged a bullet for now.
Chiquita and deb have both chickens and quail. Armageddon has not occurred yet so I would put my money on them and their way of coexistence.
Quote: Do you have any dun or chocolate? Can't remember which colors you hatched. I'd love to see pics.
Do you still have porcelains and are you going to be breeding them?
