Loving my single set of quail from Chiquita . Thank you for allowing a visit. You are soooo sweet!

Decided to get them out of the garage sometime before the snow hits. So went looking to find a design to build into my coop ( space saver) . Well.... As usual... People get hostile on the topic !!! No quail if you keep chicken or you will kill the entire local population of quail? What the heck!

Since this is my safe zone ill ask here.

Where do you winter your quail?!? Some quotes say you can't allow ANY cross contamination . And let's face it , with kids helping me with chores AND my time allotment for chores I just don't see how I can disinfect myself top to bottom from one place to another?!?

Then I see pictures of happy quail in the same coop with happy chickens?

How do you do it ?

How big are they? You know I like the Wheaten, Khaki, and Dun colors too. I was talking to someone local and he wasn't sure that the Wheaten Ameraucanas would hold any interest for people because they are so "plain".

Another case of beauty is in the eye of the chicken lover.
d'Anvers are about the size of a pigeon.

I have found that more people like the W/BWs better than the other colors of Ameraucanas. The Ameraucana eggs that sell for the most money are always the W/BWs, especially when their color is good.

Open window, close the door, that's how I got rid of this guy.

The cat brought him in and turned him loose in my bedroom.

that was my plan -- and it's worked! at least, i don't see the bat anywhere now -- have closed the window (don't want raccoons climbing in), but also keeping the door closed for the night too, just in case. bats are super-cool, but i don't need them in the bathroom.

and now that i can focus back on chickens -- wow, those quail d'anvers are beautiful!!!

well done!  i've come home from work to discover a brown bat hanging on the bathroom wall, higher up than i can reach, even standing on a chair -- trying to figure out how to spin this one!  (for now i just opened a window & closed the bathroom door & hope it figures it out...)

I love bats!! We have some here but they don't fly around the house. When I lived in sierraville us kids spent one summer sleeping in a barn. It was full of bats and I loved it. The rattlesnakes I did not like.

I have become especially crazy about the Dun, Khaki and Chocolate colored birds this year :drool

I am not a fan of those colors. But your girls are an exception. Does this color dilute like splash?

The quail can't be exposed to chicken poo. The chickens can get as much quail feed and poo as you like. Put your quail OFF the ground on wire or washable floor . Make sure the roof is covered s the chickens that perch on it can't poo on your quails. Chickens eat the dropped quail feed . I should have shown you my quail coops!

From what I understand that solves it. If you have more questions ask.

I love bats too! They are so fun to watch and I love that they eat LOTS of bugs!!

The Khaki Quail color is a dilute (same as splash) of the Dun Quail color.

Lolololol. This is the safe zone. Why do you think I spend my time here? I am a wimp and those quail threads can be mean! They seem to be looking to pick a fight.

I have this concern too because as soon as I get moved I will hopefully be getting some of Chiquita's jumbo eggs :D

I understand the quail can still get issues even from being above the chickens because poop particles can be air born.

However, like you say there are people that seem to be fine letting them coexist but others say they have just dodged a bullet for now.

Chiquita and deb have both chickens and quail. Armageddon has not occurred yet so I would put my money on them and their way of coexistence.
