Thank you for the tip about no roost. I did separate him last night. This morning I went out to let all the birds loose (we do free range except for our breeders). I have a sleep deprivation fog going on (I'm mom to an infant) and opened his door. He took off. I forgot to even watch him run. He's now out beating the bushes for bugs. We shall see if he does more damage to himself today. If so, I guess he'll stay in a pen for a while longer. Hopefully he isn't badly damaged!
I remember those days. Now I have a know-it-all teenager.

I have a question this morning. Does anyone have on hand a link for a study that compares the amount of food eaten by a fast growing meatie chicken over the course of its short life to the amount of food eaten by a heritage breed or a slightly faster growing breed such as Bresse? I am wondering if it takes a certain amount of food to produce a certain body weight, if the cost isn't close on the two even though the heritage breeds live longer. I know that the Cornish X are not as active especially towards the end of their lives when they are so heavy but the heritage breeds do forage if allowed to and get some of their nutrition that way.
Sounds like an interesting comparison. A friend of mine raised meaties and they were disgusting. They don't even move around much, just eat and poop. But they did taste really good.

Welcome! We have family down in Moran hill and San Jose . We ran away together 15 years ago up to Tahoe ...Also Chiquita is in the foothills .
They are binging? That's really a lot don't you guys think? Maybe some things are sneaking and stealing? That's a bummer about the extra poop. As if there isn't enough of that.lol

Our Costco is still carrying the 40 lb organic layer. It seems to last 2 weeks at least. We have 15 birds in that yard. Maybe different because we are a family of 6 and they get all if our table scraps!
You know I bought that bag too and am still using it. It has been at least two weeks and I have 13 birds. They aren't eating it hardly at all it seems like. I used to have to fill the feeder a half a scoop every day. Now I am down to half a scoop every 3 days if that.....? Maybe they don't like it?

They like it fine--the one from Costco? Better feed fills them up and they do not over eat.

That is one of the reasons fermented is recommended--they eat less so there is less waste.

I purchased a bag of the organic feed at Costco but I lost the contents label. Does anyone still have theirs? Does this feed have organic corn and/or organic soy beans? I've been mixing it with plain yogurt, shredded vegies, kelp powder, etc. and giving it to my flock for their morning treat.

It had organic soy Beans and I think Wheat.

I will check this weekend.

When I did a search for the Costco brand which is NatureSmart, it comes up with Agway. The product bag says Cargill Animal Nutrition so I'm guessing that Cargill owns Agway. Other Cargill brands are Purina and Nutrena.

I've gotten so used to eating my spare cockerels that when I have to eat store bought chicken, it has no flavor. It's just like home produced eggs, way more expensive, but there is no comparison in taste.

This weekend I'm hoping to find time to process a couple of more turkeys and one of my ducks.

That is so very true!

I have one Pita Pinta to Process and in several weeks, Three Basque Cockerels and two more Pita Pintas. Yum!

Welcome!

It is great to have you here. Chiqita lives close to you.

What chickens do you have?

I have some almost six-week-old chicks. 1 Dominique Rooster. 2 Dominique Pullets. 1 New Hampshire Red Pullet. 1 Buff Orpington Pullet. 1 Easter Egger Pullet. They're going out to the coop/run this Monday, their six week birthday. :)

Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone.

I think that Wikepedia is confusing Central California with The Central Valley.

Wikipedia is very unreliable. Anyone can alter the information there. Logically, since north, central and south are directional terms, you would divide the state in 3rds. I would consider the line on the map as the dividing line between central and southern CA and around Sacramento to be the line between central and Northern CA. I wonder if the names are old and were established before the true northern CA had been settled. Kind of like calling Iowa and Oklahoma the "Midwest" when it much closer to the East Coast.
