Christmas lights ( ie mood lighting) works for most chickens, but my quail didn't respond. The silkies also needed a BIT more light ( tube lighting worked, twinkle lights did not) The LF seemed to be fine with christmas lights. They all seem to think differently about it!
That is good news for me--My Dark egg layers are large fowl(Penedesencas)

Wow, that sounds cheap. This is a good time of year to buy eggs since the demand and prices are so low.
Yes, it is a good time for to get them. Also, the cold seems to hurt hatching eggs a lot less than the heat-provided the eggs do not freeze.

It is a good time to check for used incubators too.

So does anyone have 6 fertile LF eggs they are willing to sell? I think I want to give Mama Chicken some eggs to hatch.
I have welsummers. I'm near Auburn, but I also ship eggs.

Time for my rant - I got 3 eggs yesterday. All the chickens I feed and I only get 3 eggs? The new girls need to start pitching in here.

I'm only getting 3 eggs a day from 15 or so chickens, including my 3 Serama hens. I'm sure you have more than that but I still feel your pain lol.

i have lights one my hybrid group. with 24 birds total, i'm getting 12-18 a day. But i'm going to turn off the lights at the end of november to give them a rest. my unlit pen is the marans and ameraucanas- they are doing "ok".

HA! I thought it was you :). I replied to the email too. Its a crazy week this week, we are finally making some movement on the 1/2 done kitchen and I have to stain and waterlox the countertops! bad timing with the weather, but It wont get better this year, so im chop chopping. I was trying to remember how to apply the waterlox stain after waiting a year between doing the first one and these, and saw all the pictures of people doing their butcherblock, and I am excited again!

We pay 85 per drum ( 55gal?? dont remember) it comes out to about 14 per bag for 20% . I'm not 100% sure because its by volume not weight.

Now back to cleaning out the garage so we can move quail inside for the winter!
That is a good price for feed. May have to go that route in the future. Glad you're making progress in all your chores, I feel like I'm going in circles with mine :)

i've actually been having better luck with eggs lately -- several older girls who'd stopped due to molting and/or broodiness have recently started up again, plus two in my teenaged pen (one of the campines, plus the SFH) have started laying for the first time -- i actually got SIX eggs the other day!

and did some organizing this afternoon -- hung new watering buckets (with those nipple things on the undersides) in the three pens that didn't have them yet, and moved my last former-broody back into the big pen with the other adults. Harold the CL is still hanging out in a breeder pen with two of the older hens, waiting to see whether a guy in southern CA wants to buy him or not -- hoping he learns some manners in the meantime, he's still awfully eager to get into the breeding business. generally tidied things up. enjoying this crisp fall weather...

It is sad to not get eggs!

I collected 7 eggs today and 12 with one broken one today. I do have lights on in the big coup.

chuckle ... it gets like that doesn't it?

we carried over only 3 hens from last year - all of whom are in molt and not laying. the 10 new girls have been ssslllooowwww starting but this last two weeks has seen steady improvements: from days of 0 or 1 or 2 eggs we're now getting 6 a day. Curiously, it's the EE/Ameraucana hens that seem to be the slowest getting ramped up.

I don't use lights and so may not see full production from all the ladies until next spring, but if it will stay up over 6 a day it becomes cost effective.
