I hope your tail bone gets better soon!So glad to read your update, Deb!
I slipped on the icy ground yesterday morning, after gathering the three measly eggs in the Homestead coop; saved the eggs but had to change out of mucky sweatpants and sweatshirt. Tailbone is tender today. At the Ranch, I closed the three windows (still plenty of ventilation through the two, high, wall-length vents) and turned on the ceiling light fixture in hopes the waterer won't freeze hard.
One of the Ranch cockerels is obviously my dominant rooster Carl's son because I do a double-take every time I see him, he looks SO much like him. (He has a better beard, though... ) So, he is now called "Carlson." Carl has fathered many, many sons, but none which look so much like him.
Can't find matching gloves..... But got three different halves of pairs. Should I care what that looks like out in public?![]()
Yep, chickens are like potato chips. You can't have just one!So sorry PetRock. It takes that one special animal that starts it all. She was beautiful.![]()
Ron that makes me sad too. So sorry. I love Australorps. It is cold!
It is a sad morning for me--I lost an Australorp over night. She was gasping but I could not find anything stuck in her throat. I suspect she ate some of the flooring in the coop. They ripped it up recently.
She is off for a necropsy this morning. She is one of the Hupp Australoprs--not the blue one though one of the black ones. She is still pretty--nice glistening feathers and she is very heavy so not a wasting disease.
Deb that is great. Are you doing chicken stuff?? How nice that you have friends to stay with. I have family in NZ which island will you be visiting.Hi, just checking in. I can't go back and read the 1,303 posts since I was here last.
I'm currently still in England and won't be home until the end of March (there is going to be that little side trip to NZ). I miss you all and will try to check in more often. It's nice having friends to stay with and being retired to grant me the time. And a VERY understanding DH to tend everyone at home.
I'll try to respond to the PM's asap.
Ohhhh. She was such a pretty girl. I am sorry.
They are all so pretty thank you for posting them. I wouldn't mind OE girls if you end up selling them, And those silkies too, yowza! Are you getting snow yet? I am getting slush at 900' and 38degrees.SO sorry to hear about everyones losses!I had a couple of surprises today concerning my chicks! First, the white Silkie chick I thought was a rooster is a pullet! That makes 5 pullets and 4 roosters! The other surprise is just now I went down to take new pictures of my Marans chicks and realized most if not all of them are OEs! I wondered why their colors were off! The GCM pullets were in with the GCM and BW Ameraucana roosters, but the Marans rooster is the boss and I never saw my BWA breeding anyone, sneaky guy! A couple of the rooster chicks are BLUE! That means they will either feather out as blue golden cuckoos or blue wheaten! The one chick that everyone liked that has the gold head appears to be an OE pullet! It will be fun to see what their final colors will be. The blue golden cuckoo rooster chicks will be gorgeous! Here are some pictures of the Silkies and the Marans (OE?) chicks~

So sorry for you too!So sorry for your loss, Ron.
We spent Thanksgiving week in San Diego at the beach and I am still trying to recover from vacation hangover. The day before we left, we lost the very first chicken, a hatchery barred rock that my BIL gave to Monet. Pet was the inspiration for my BYC name and would have been 4 in March. I was treating her for sour crop and vent gleet but she wasn't responding. I'm guessing it was either cancer or problems with her egg laying equipment. We were leaving early the next day so we buried her in our chicken graveyard rather than try to ship her to Davis. RIP Pet and thank you for starting us on this fun journey!
Sorry for your sore bum. As for the non-matching gloves, it's "cool" now to not match, so you're good. All the kids wear different color socks. Besides, we're "of age" that we don't care.So glad to read your update, Deb!

Is she your only pullet laying? Normally when others lay in the boxes, they will get the hint. The only suggestion I can offer is to keep them locked up for a few days to force her to lay in the nest box.i have a couple of questions I need help with.
First: I have a pullet who's been laying since Sept. She still just drops her egg in the middle of nowhere. Not sure if she's every laid in a nest at all. But EVERY day I find one in the pen or on the grass. there are 3 nest boxes now to 10 hens. Moved 3 hens out of the coop last week, but still no nest delivery. Any suggestions? I use fake eggs in the boxes too.
Second: I'm seeing some of my bresse babies feather out. I think about 3 look like they're having some uneven feathering. I know in some breeds it's telltale of cockerels, but is it in all breeds? I'm hoping for at least 3 girls. They're only 2 weeks, so it may be too soon to tell. They are the friendlies things though. It may be hard to process this breed. Even as their mom tried to lead them away from me, they came running when I called them. They are realizing I am the treat factor. They let me reach out and grab them pretty easily. Much easier than my other breeds have, and I always try to socialize them as much as I can.![]()
