Yay for Winter Solstice! I went out and one of my OE pullets was singing the egg song.

I also have read about a particular type of light bulb emitting toxic fumes, but I don't recall which one.

cfls have mercury in them. If they break, you are supposed to open windows and leave the room for 20 minutes. They are also considered toxic waste and are not supposed to go into land fills. LEDs are much safer but more expensive.

Thank you to all of you sweet, wonderful, Northern Californians! I will continue to stay here with a few comments. I am having a difficult time with this move and you make me feel much better. You are so nice. I will keep you posted as we move our coop and our 20 girls.

I live right down the mountain from you, just below Pine Grove on Highway 88.  What kind of chickens are you going to play with?  I should warn you, being on this thread can cause chicken overload - so build a nice BIG coop - you will need it

We looked at places in Pine Grove. Its a very nice area but our chickens were not welcomed in the rentals we lookwd at. I have a variety of chickens and just love them. I have been here on this thread for awhile and I really like the people. I have learned so many things and I am happy I can stay. It is nice to know you live just 'down the road'. Thank you

Today we got the first olive eggs from Jason's (Hangtown Farms) OE!! It's so pretty and dark. I'm glad these girls are finally laying!!

Haven't been on in a while. We thought winter was in but it really fizzled on the snow end. The pack in my yard is 6-8 inches . However the temps are yuck . We are stable lows at 10-15 but hit a week of -10 below . AND we (by order if the cheif) had to get the serama out! In a warm spell.... 15 low... Put them with the olandsk dwarfs. I figured they were a better shot than the mean old hatchery fatties. And would you believe they're still alive living under a few choice hens!!!!!! The olandsk Roos watch them closely,
But only interrupt disturbances and are NOT aggressive. I did see senior roo put the whooping to a fatty hatchery Hen for picking on his girl but as soon as she stopped so did he ! Amazing birds!!! And the fatty is three times as large! Since the olandsk girls don't fight back I segregated them from the hatchery girls...

So I have been struggling with feeling well. Couldn't quite shake it and hello... Were expecting. That's why I'm a few thousand post behind! When I went to my midwife thinking I was 10 weeks... Nope over 14, now were at 17 weeks. Time flies !

Well interesting evening!We got woken up at 2 am buy a bunch of police in our front yard.

The neighbors about 4 doors down and one of their drunk house guests slammed into their car and spun out down our hill.

There was a huge truck in our yard. It took out our fence and a few small trees and abandoned the car. I guess we will find out if it's covered by home owners insurance.

I'm amazed the accident was as bad as it was and whomever the driver was was able to get put of the car and abandon it.

We did not hear the accident but the dog went nuts when the tow truck guys and police came into the driveway. " get the cops" sounds almost like "get the racoons" in rufas speak.

I will post a picture in the morning . Or in the reasonable morning.

I'm very happy now that Mrs bowman planted all those pink trees. He would have slid right into the garage.
