Can you shoot a chicken in the head to humanely euthanize it?

Breaking it's neck, or just cutting off its head with a sharp knife might be easier (or at least a more "sure" thing). I've made a little gas chamber for rats before. I had them in a bucket, then i had a ziplock bag with backing soda in it, and a small tube that went from the bag to the bucket (with a lid on the bucket). Add vinegar to the baking soda, and close the bag around the tube. The gas goes into the bucket, and the little guys go to sleep, and pass away. Sorry about your poor chicken. :(

I
I agree. Its probably as humane as anything. The only thing though is the noise from a gun scares the rest of the flock so it would be best to do somewhere else
think a 22 would be humane. Not sure about a pellet, may not do that job. Shotgun: well I'm not familiar with. So my vote is the 22. I believe it would be quicker than a hatchet. So sorry about your bird. I hate to see things suffer :(

Silly Chicken!
wow I did not know they laid brown eggs
Yes, they lay extra large brown eggs. An egg from the Pita Pinta hatch was the largest egg I have hatched so far. It was Jumbo and did not fit in the egg turner.

such a nice looking chicken. Wish I had the room but nope not now.
I should have my other run tomorrow then I can separate my silver ameraucana and crele penedesenca rooster for that project.

then my black penedesenca will have there own run too.

I have a langshan laying her egg from standing on the roost. She gets up there and lays it and then it drops down and breaks :( I put a nest box in weeks ago for them to get familiar with but no, she just kicks all the straw/shavings out of the box but doesn't lay In it! How do I fix this?

Thanks everyone... :/ I can't bring myself to poison or gas her... I'd feel like one of those murderers on the investigation discovery channel.

I have a hen who lays while she's walking around. Haven figured that one out. It's like she doesn't realize it's an egg and thinks she's pooping. Just walks along and BAM!

Thanks everyone...

But blowing her head off with a gun would be better?

If you don't have a hatchet a sharp knife is the quickest, and will cause the least amount of suffering.

Cut her carotid artery on the side of her neck. She will quickly bleed out and "fall asleep". She will not experience any pain and because you aren't suddenly severing her head (as you would with a hatchet) there will be minimal nerve reaction. She will probably "kick" some but it will soon pass.

It's ultimately up to you.
