If any of you use legbands on you birds, what size would be used for the average hen? I have 4 Marans that are beginning to lay, but they all look pretty close in color. I would like to be able to identify them by color.

Perhaps it is vent gleet. Its not too common in roosters but can happen.  Here is a link with photos and treatment suggestions.

hmm, that does look more like it -- i didn't know male birds could get it!  (and, i suppose it's remotely possible this isn't a male -- comb and wattles are larger than the other birds, but its also a different breed, a duckwing marans, and perhaps they just mature faster?)

although again, the bird doesn't act sick AT ALL, which it sounds like vent gleet birds do.  will try isolating him, although i'm afraid he'll get cold at night without his friends?
Don't be afraid to isolate him. During the recent freeze we had here in WV I had to isolate my roo, he did fine in temps barely above O* F. So you should have no issues as long as the isolation pen/run are predator proof. Good luck with him/her and keep us informed...I'd really like to know how you treat it and what works (and what doesn't).

thanks for the encouragement! he/she is a bit puzzled to be in a pen of his/her own, but yes, all my pens are predator-proof -- and i'll see what works! glad at least that the chick's energy is still up, not acting ill-feeling at all...

Looks really good! I've bookmarked it for future reference.

I have no experience using legbands but I have spent too much time

researching what I wanted to use and have ordered numbered colored zip ties from Strombergs. Each year I plan on placing a new color of zips on one year old chickens after they are finished growing and will then know how old each bird is. I can also track by number individual birds.

If I need help keeping track of the chicks as they grow I have self adhesive bandage wraps that comes in lots of colors. Just snip off a 1/4" and wrap. I use this to see if I can guess the boys from the girls as chicks.

I have a cockerel that has had a crop problem for a while. I was treating with miconezole but saw an ad for a sour crop pill from a place called Hakes twin City Poultry Supply. I ordered the sour crop pills and a one gallon hanging water fountain. I gave him one pill on Friday night and one pill last night. The Crop is almost down to normal and he is trying to crow now!

Their catalog has a diarrhea medicine for chickens.

watery poo is a symptom of round worms too. I see they have been treated  with ivermectin. A float test might help.

Along with the order, they sent me a list of their medicines and the withdrawal periods. Frontline was listed as Best for treatment of lice and mites with no withdrawal period. I am holding on to the charts!

I used Frontline Plus for BIG dogs on my chickens for a big lice problem. One treatment and it completely killed everything (I used a needle and put 3-5 drops in a few different spots on them, one spot on the chicks I had) Haven't had a problem with lice since! Several months.

I'm thinking that they may now have something going on with their combs... Their combs are a bit pail an a tiny bit of blackish looking spots. Do you know if it would help that? (Or is that even mites?)

I like the numbered zip ties, and colored vet wrap is a great idea for little ones!

:woot

I have the same incubator.  It works great once you learn how to adjust it. (meaning very small adjustments and wait for several hours)  I recommend getting a Brinsea spot check thermometer, they are super accurate.

Good to hear. I've turned it on and am giving myself a while to get a feel for it.

Do I put the eggs in it when it's warmed up? Also there's an egg turner in it and idk if it's connected right... How often should it be shifting? So I can try to figure it out. And if it doesn't work then how/when do I turn them myself?

Also am I suppose to candle the eggs? If so I have no idea when or what to look for. Is there a good place I can read about the whole process step by step?

Thanks!

Combs have more to do with blood flow. Worms can make combs go pale along with just molting.

Are they laying eggs?
