Oh, a quick question. I'm looking to buy some Blue Laced Red Wyandottes, and some dark chocolate layers, maybe some EE's. But most important to me is the BLR Wyandottes. Anyone in or around the Redding or Sacramento areas(or anywhere close or inbetween) sell them?

And I have 6 golden cuckoo Marans pullets that come from nice dark eggs.

I'm just so irritated. I had purchased 3 "Ameracauna" chicks in July. Even then, I knew better...that they were Easter Eggers. I got them from a feed store called Atwater Feed, a local store that specializes in birds.

Last week several of my pullets started laying, but all the eggs were brown. I hadn't been able to confirm my suspicion that the Easter Eggers were also laying the browns until tonite. I saw it with my own two peepers. ARGH! Thats the only reason I bought those girls...to ADD color! Now my entire flock is made up of brown egg layers. Boring.

Ok, done whining now.

question: if a chick has unzipped halfway and then stopped, long enough for the feathers that are sticking out to completely dry and fluff up (i got home around 4:30, and it hasn't progressed at all since then) -- but i can still see it breathing -- any cause for worry?

:( that is disappointing. I have Easter eggers that only lay blue eggs. Really cool. Bluer than my CCLs

That is completely normal. Let it work on it and the chick will probably be out by the morning.

Can you get a picture?

It's a long story why I would drive all the way to Atwater to buy hatchery chicks; but I did and I know they buy from Belt hatchery. I have always had good luck with Belt. Although I got one that lays a light cream egg from them. I'm going to cross it with my Cream Legbar and see what come out. Sorry for your frustration.

I will never buy them from feed stores again. You are pretty much guaranteed they are going to lay brown eggs. I have had that happen with the 3 I bought from a local feed store too. and the other one I bought there was a rooster. I have 2 I bought from Chickee that will be laying blue and blue/green eggs though....they just haven't started laying yet. They are my last 2 holdouts....

thanks, Ron -- can't get a photo without moving it completely, it's in a corner spot that's directly under the light, so always in shadow if i try to photograph. but i'll leave it alone & hopefully it'll be out and about soon enough!

They can be quite frustrating when they do that!

Yes. Lesson learned for sure. I would get rid if them if I could. But my daughter named them "The Spice Girls": Sugar, Cocoa and Cinnamon.
