Pleasr excuse my language right here but **** :( we lost twp more silkies one is the one i was babying earlier. thats now 6 birds in less then 24 hours. my mom is going to call cackle in ghe morning. what the hell am i doing wrong? the waterers and feeders were scrubbed clean, wood chips taken out, news paper replaced, heat is staying between 95-99 (the care sheet that came with them said for slightly higher temps for bantams) ive done everything right and they are still dying :((( ugh

I had something possibly exciting happen today, mostly because I wasn't expecting it. I have two 8 week old mixed cockerels that need to go to new homes, so I made a flyer to take to my local feed store. At the store, the owners vaguely remembered me and asked if I was the "lady who got the Jersey Giants". And, since I am "she", I responded "yes". Lol.

They said that they have had a lot of local interest in purchasing JG chicks and if I would hatch some, they would purchase them from me or sell them on consignment. When I purchased the JG's from Cackle this summer, this was a future possibility. But, now I'm nervous. I've never done this before. Also, this would be my first JG hatch. So, I wonder if I should try to sell them myself on Craigslist, etc. Except that I would then be spending more money on feed, etc; instead of just selling them at a few days old to the feed store. These are "hatchery" chickens and I am under no illusions that they will sell for more than they are worth.

OPINIONS and ADVISE....Please..

Excellent way to gain experience! People who purchase their chickens from feed stores are not usually looking for show birds so don't worry about your breeder quality. Usually people are just interested in a healthy new addition to their flock. If you make a little bit to help with the feed bill, then hooray :) That's just my opinion. (disclaimer)

i think it's just during shipping they got too cold. they are so little, so once they get too cold for long periods there isn't much you can do. But like ron said, after the 2nd day the survivors should be ok

It is not what your doing its the weather. This is why I don't ship baby sereamas :(.

Double hugs to you.

I didnt see anymore lathargic ones when i checked so hopefully we dont lose anymore. there was a white silkie earlier who would do the gasping thing for a few mind then stop and be fine. is he tryinb to die on me too or is it something else? I know when i picked him up earlier he like drooled i guess? My EE hens do that if i accidenly scare them but is it normal in young chicks?

Cackle should replace the birds for you - just ask them not to ship replacements until later in the Spring. What they can't do for you is take away all the ANGST over babying a chick only to have it die anyway. That happened to us with our very first birds. It was awful! Just a terrible thing to go through. I'm a little tougher now but I still hate it when the chickies die.
