Quote: No. Temperature stays the same.

Quote: Spraddle leg usually happens right at hatch, or within a day or so. (might not be severe enough at first to see it) Leg issues later on is usually a slipped hock, in which they need to be put down. I have never been successful fixing it, and end up putting them down later.

Go chicks go!!!

I candled the eggs in the bator tonight, and found something weird. -They are on day 15- One of the orp eggs has 2 dark spots (like the black eye ball spots), with flickering movement between them. I figure there is something majorly wrong, and I would think it was already "done" but that movement is just..... weird. I didn't see anything else moving inside, and it wasn't moving because I was moving the egg.

I know it's hard to see, but you can see the two black dots (not moving). In between the dots I can see the movement. Any guesses on what's going on?

I think I still see veins, so it's not dead yet. One could be the head and the other the heart.

I didnt see anymore lathargic ones when i checked so hopefully we dont lose anymore. there was a white silkie earlier who would do the gasping thing for a few mind then stop and be fine. is he tryinb to die on me too or is it something else? I know when i picked him up earlier he like drooled i guess? My EE hens do that if i accidenly scare them but is it normal in young chicks?
I'm betting they are too hot. The gasping you are seeing could be them panting. Having them too hot will kill really fast.

(( ugh
Nikki,

I am really sorry for your loss. Sounds to me like you are doing everything right so please do not blame yourself. Unfortunately shipping can be really hard on the birds.

Do you lower your temp at lockdown or at pipping?

I set them for hatching on day 19. The closer to hatching the lower the temperature can be. They are supposed to be at 95 degrees when they hatch. If the incubator is at 100 when the hatch, they can actually over heat. Also, the combination of humidity and heat lowers the oxygen level in the incubator leading to suffocation at lower humidity levels.

If you look at the chart I have posted, they have a lower temperature at hatch. Not 98 degrees, but they say to run at 100.5 for the first 18 days and then go down to 99.7.

I have 3 cute little guys out now. They let me sleep until 2:30 this morning.

Sorry that they woke you up! Do you have to be awake when they hatch? I hope that they didn't disturb anyone else in your family.

Do any of you have the heat lamp stand, made by Premier? I ordered one and one leg was chipped when I took it out of the box. Then the leg connecters broke when we were putting it together. I've always liked Premier's product quality, but I don't recommend buying the heat lamp stand.

@capayvalleychick

There were 5 our and one more zipping when I left for work! They are doing very well with hatching.

I have been bothered a lot more during hatches. This one is nice one. The one that I wonder about will be next weekend. The shipped UofA blues hatched over three days and was a very long single breed hatch. I have had longer when I had a big combination hatch--that one had the first chck hatch on day 19 and the last one hatch on day 23. That is a challenge to keep humidity up and get the older chicks out so that they do not mess up the eggs still hatching.

Sorry to bother you ron, but what chart did you post? I didn't see it. And the 100.5, is that for forced air?

Kim, would you please send a link for this product so I make sure that I don't buy it? Thanks!
