Okay, in addition to my last post, I have more questions about fermented feed...Once it's fermented(3 days or so from what I've read) how long does it stay good for? How much should I make at 1 time for a flock of 6 hens?

Sorry to spam but I have ANOTHER question. This scared me...I found this in the chicken coop in the morning, it was in the area that they always poop from roosting. What IS this and do I need to be worried?

Looks a little like a soft shell egg cant really tell from the pic though

Ayam Cemani hen and rooster. Got some pics in the sun the other day

They are STUNNING!

Hmm... not sure it's a fair deal, lol. I used to always catch snakes. My mom hated it, but she refused to pay money for a snake, so she always said the rule was if I wanted a pet snake, I could keep what I could catch. Then she found my rattlesnake tanks and changed that rule. SO unreasonable. A twelve year old keeping venomous snakes in fishtanks, what could possibly go wrong?

My mom FREAKed out when I caught a garter snake at 5 or 6. That was the last time I showed her a snake...

I start a ferment on the weekend in a single bucket. I take from that bucket all week. I add more feed and water a few days in when it gets low and then the next weekend I get the full batch going again. Whatever is left gets stirred in with the new batch and acts like starter. I will get another bucket this summer so that I have two stages but any soaked feed makes the nutrients more available to your birds therefore I don't feel badly for giving them the ferment on Day 1. You and I live in similar climates. I imagine this method will work well for you too.
