California - Northern

did you see the UCD paper I posted last week about mites? In California they are becoming resistant to pyrethrum and permectrin.

Time to break out the Seven dust!

You have it backwards. They are resistant to Sevin dust.

"Also, pyrethrins and synthetic pyrethroids are a good choice for use in a chemical rotation program because they
are chemically unrelated to the organophosphate and carbamate pesticides traditionally
used for mite and louse control. If you rotate the type of pesticide that you use, you
can slow the pest’s development of pesticide resistance. Northern fowl mite is known to
be resistant to both carbaryl and malathion in some parts of California.
"

I looked it up because I'm having difficulty getting rid of the mites here. I'm using permectrin 10 spray.

I am so sorry about the mite problem. It is a very bad year for them.

Right you are!

Have you tried the mite strips? McMurray sells them.

The UCD pdf will not copy text so I am taking snap shots.

It says that in some parts of Caifornia, Northern fowl mites are becoming resistant to carbaryl and malathion. Pyrethins and synthetic pyrethroids are still working. I did read about a new poison for mites. I do not remember what it was and of course it has not been approved for chickens. It might be worth looking into though.

Quote: I have both the 5% Sevin dust (carbaryl) and the Poultry Dust (25% Permethrin), so I guess I'm covered either way.

I noticed this morning that all but the two smallest chicks seem to now be using the nipple waterers almost exclusively (which is great since I want to switch them to a Chicken Fountain system in the run when they go outside). They didn't use them at all as far as I could tell until maybe two or three days ago. Then one of them started and of course they ALL had to come see WHAT THE NEW THING IS!!! And now they're just moving themselves over. I'll keep the quart jar fount in the brooder as well though until I see the little guys using the nipples, too.

Have any of you tried Bayer's Tempo SC for mites in coops? I bought some for flies arond the house and yard, but haven't tried it on mites yet.

I have seen posts where no pet strips were used in the coop for mites.

I was curious, so I read the reviews on Amazon and one person said they bought it to kill mites and it didn't work. All the other reviews said it works great for other bugs, but not mites and fleas.

Thanks, I'll have to try it the next time I see mites. :D Works great for flies!

Do they make a Tempo pest strip?

They were using this:

http://www.amazon.com/Hot-Shot-5580...TF8&qid=1414087037&sr=8-1&keywords=pest+strip

I hope they did not keep food in the coop and removed the strip at night.

We used stuff like this in the house when growing up so I think long term exposure is a cancer risk. It says not to use it around pets.

Saturating the wood in the coop, especially the cracks and corners; especially the bottom and top of roosts with liquid permectrin has been posted for mites. I had been doing this every two weeks but have slacked off on it.

I better add that to my list for this week end....
