Jeff, I can't access mail from the phone app, any news on getting the Blue Copper Marans chicks this weekend? Anyone going from Redding to Chico this weekend and wants to transport some of Jeff's chicks for us?
I think I may have a ride for them on Monday eve with a friend that lives in chico Or my parents are visiting this weekend last minute and would be leaving Monday so they could meet you anywhere on the 5 during day on Monday.

One of my black copper marans pullets. ;)

I do have a question. All my chickens are doing great but one. It's very tiny, scrawny...extremely docile.(that is not her/him above) Alert, eats, drinks, forages. She is less than half he size as her other same aged cohorts. She is feather light. Today she had a swollen eye. We medicated it and put her back out. (not sure if boy or girl actually) Just ONE eye which means its likely an injury.

My husband wants to bring her in and nurse for a week and see if she is just being bullied. (we have seen it)

What do you guys think? I checked her vent- vent itself clean but poop around her feathers. Her skin is clear. Eyes bright and clear (but the one now). We see her eating and drinking and free ranging. She is usually alone though. Although surviving I would say she is not thriving at all. She looks like a 5/6 week old chick. Not one twice that age.

I would bring her in. What is she? Some breeds develop slower and even feather slower.

It could just be failure to thrive. They will smash her if she is a lot smaller than the big ones.

She may need to live with your bantams if she survives until then.

She is one of the black copper marans. She is a LOT smaller than the rest. Will try to get some pictures. The bantams are wild compared to the big chickens. Absolutely spastic when we go to feed them or give them water. She is smaller than male bantam. She might be the size of the female bantam but she weighs maybe half what the Banty hem weighs. Sun- Wed one duck a day. Thursday we got 2. Today? 4!!!! They are SO yummy. Oh my gosh! My 3 year old is grossed out that they are duck eggs but after eating some - keeps asking for more.
Oh my gosh! My kids brought in egg #5 for today!!! Oh my gosh you guys! This is so stinking exciting!!

Up until you said "duck eggs" it sort of sounded you were eating an awful lot of ducks this week...

I have never tried duck eggs. I have heard that they are much richer than chicken eggs - is that true?

Just had my first quail eggs a week or so ago, courtesy of Chiquita, who brought me a margarine tub full of them to try. Really tasty! Wonderful little snack sized treats when they are hard boiled. Making me think I might just keep some of these orphaned coturnix that keep following me home. I wonder if they could live in my fully enclosed vegie garden? Also wondering if I can raise pheasants in there - after seeing the pheasants that Karen's (Sew N Grow's) son raises I am lusting after the Lady Amhersts. I could build a shelter in the shady end of the garden where nothing much grows anyway. I wonder how much damage a trio of pheasants and a covy of quail could cause in a vegie garden.

Looking forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday! If anyone is looking for bantam cochins or good quality mottled Japanese bantams let me know - I could bring them up to Sonoma with me.

Oh Yes, wait until the little pullet is older to move her in with the Bantams.

She may surprise you and catch up quickly.

Ok here is sick chicken. I think it's a he because the red comb and wattles and copper head/neck. The other pullets to not have copper heads or red combs and wattles. But even his comb is tiny compared to the others. I can tell by lifting him - he doesn't even weigh a pound. He is bones. I opened his mouth and it was clear.

Here you can see something wrong with ONE eye.

He is not acting tired or lethargic. He stays away from the others and prefers to usually be inside near the food and water. But he does go out on his own and forage. But again- keeps to himself.

I have lots of wild quail on my property. Sometimes a pheasant or two will stroll through and freak out the chickens, but they don't stay long. The quail love my garden. I know that they dust bathe all over the garden area, leaving little wallows. Sometimes they damage seedlings. I don't know if they actually eat the plants or not. Something always eats my bean plants before they get a chance to grow. I'm not familiar with the coturnix, but the native quail & pheasant can fly straight up & over most any fence.
