Ok. Thanks. I may do that later this week when it gets cold and stormy. I am in the mountains so we will get cold.

Are all white leghorns stupid? Compared to my barred rocks, partridge rock.and production red they really seem to not get it.

My barred rocks either let me pick them up or if I herd them they get the idea and go in the others follow except my leghorns. My leghorns are dumb and will.just run in circles.

Leghorns are a bit high strung--they may be a bit scared of everything and act odd because of that.

I do wonder though if the hatchery breeding has done something to them other than size.

There are some silver penciled rocks around that seem like a good choice. Do you have the leghorns for white eggs? Silver gray dorkings lay nice eggs and are very smart.

I have leghorns because they were the last 3 chicks in the pullet bin At TSC when I got my others and I didn't want to leave them. I actually didn't know they were white leghorns when I first got them. I hope they lay as well.as I heAR otherwise I won't get the breed again. No particular reason but inlike the barred rocks and the production reds ( at least I think that's what they are)

Neal has some that are very socialized. Not exactly friendly like Barred Rocks of Buff Orps but not skittish. They lay like champions for him and are currently being cross bred with RIR cockerel the hybrid chicks seem quite friendly at the moment. I picked up 3 white leghorn pullet chicks (Privet Hatchery) as future breeders should this cross produce good layers too. They are still too young to tell how their temperment will be but they are in with some pitas and other friendly chicks and I start them on a hand feeding program while they are still young to help tame mine. (Did this with some CLB I have this year and its working much better the previous year not hand fed were very flighty)

Hey Ron,
Just what the heck is, as you put it, an Urch/Turnland?  Now can you guys see why I do not favor using mysterious abbreviations and Lower Slobovian lingo?  The creator of that tongue, the guy who also created Lil Abner, Alfred Kaplan (signed his stuff Al Capp) has been long gone and I think we ought to let his lingo catch up to him to never being used again.
Okay, the ball is in your court…
Best regards,
Neal, the Zooman

Pardon me for not being Ron, but Duane Urch of Urch/Turland Poultry is a breeder of old time Standard breeds of chickens.
He has been around a long long time.
Here's a link. Ask and you might learn the lingo. Really just a small abbreviation

I hope that last didn't sound rude. It was meant more tongue in cheek since it was no kind of double speak at all. Ask and you shall be answered here (by somebody) right or wrong. Anyway I hope the link is illuminating. No hard feelings I hope
:thumbsup

I shared these pics on the Pita PInta thread but wanted to share them with my N CA friends! I have several broodies sitting on Pita PInta eggs and the hatching began this week. This is one of my favorite hens and she hatched 6 PIta PInta chicks a few days ago. She is a Cream Legbar/? mix named Trinket. Last year, she hatched 3 different clutches and was an excellent mama. I love this bird!
