I processed my first ever cornish cross meat bird today. It was about 7 weeks-old, broody raised and basically free ranged ( never penned up). Turned out to be just over 4 pounds after processing. Boy, do I hate plucking! It didn't help that the scalding water ended up not being hot enough. But, I got it done. I have 4 more to process over the next few days.

I did two little cockerels yesterday. They can't weigh more than 2 pounds finished. One came out perfect the other I left in the scalding water too long and the skin just wanted to peel off. Traumatic killing nice little birds. They were about 10.5 weeks old and Legbar/EE crosses. I wish they hadn't started crowing! Kern

Nice job Kern!

I set the water in a big canner pot, but the thermometer in it and get it to 150 to 155. I process in the kitchen, so set the gas to about 2 or 3 when the water is up to the correct temperature.

If you are processing a couple, there is no need to process outside.

Hi all, I have had no further losses. 6 girls total lost all from the same pen. They included my most favorite girls, my Pita Pinta, my Chocolate Rock, my Konza and one of my Dorkings as well as an Australorp who was member of my original flock and a blue Ameraucana

I have had no new illness in over a week.

I am wondering if you think it would be safe to let the two pens where no illness surfaced out to range. They won't be able to go into the affected pen even if they wanted too. I feel badly for them. being penned up when they are used to daily ranging. Again neither of the two pens I would be letting out would have access to the other pen and there was no sickness in those pens even though all of my birds ranged together until this whole thing started.

Thanks

Sounds like it would be fine.

I hope the rest stay healthy for you!

How absolutely heart-breaking! I must've missed a post somewhere along the way - do you know what the illness was? Did you get a necropsy done? I had to put down a newly-shipped quarantined pullet at the vet last week and I'm still bummed. My vet is good on my live birds but not equipped for extensive accurate necropsy. Our nearest agricultural sciences college hasn't expanded necropsies to poultry yet. It was a weekend and there was no way I was keeping a downed bird in the fridge for 3 days anyway. There's another agricultural college in the next county and if it ever happens again I will have to travel if it doesn't happen on a weekend again. There's no way I'm shipping a dead bird either! From what I understand the bodies can't be frozen and have to reach the college asap for accurate research.

Someone shared with me that Oxine products are good for disinfecting coops infected from illnesses and Oxine AH is good in the drinking water for helping to prevent disease but I've never used it. Maybe someone on this thread can further enlighten us?

Coming up on day 24 of crazy slow hatch

2 CLB out (boys)
1 CLB Pipped last night
1 Del out (had to help it out some as with the rolling around the shell around its legs had come off and it had nothing for leverage to push against. Both feet were out and it was sort of sitting in an eggshell bowl)
1 Del pipped early this morning.

Last hatch in this bator had one pip and out on day 25

Still holding out hope for the barred holland
